Graduate School Update Day 2019: PGR Futures
This year’s Graduate School Update Day will be held on 26 June 2019. Update Day is open to all the university’s postgraduate researchers and research degree supervisors. The theme for this year’s Update Day is ‘PGR Futures‘. It will be facilitated by Dr Billy Bryan. You can sign up here.
Programme for Update Day 2019
09:30-10:00 – Arrival and refreshments: Morley Room, Senate Building, Waterside Campus
10:00-10:15 – Introduction to the day – Ian Livingstone and Melanie Petch
10:15-11:00 – Presentation: “Is it worth doing a doctorate? Yes, but…” – Dr Billy Bryan
This talk is based on an ongoing investigation that aims to answer the question: Is a doctorate worth it? Dr Billy Bryan’s and Dr Kay Guccione’s work is based on a small exploratory study and a larger qualitative survey of doctoral graduates. The results presented in this talk (including newly emerging findings) will show how doctoral students, graduates and supervisors can maximise the value of the doctorate post-graduation.
11:00-12:00 – Parallel sessions
Parallel session: Postgraduate researchers – “Students: what do you need and how can we get it together?”
This session is centred on working out what skills, knowledge, networks and knowhow students think will be valuable for them post-doctorate. This will start off in small groups before coming together to identify the key elements needed and how they, their supervisors and the university can help.
Parallel session: Supervisors – “The doctorate – what is it good for?”
This session will involve supervisors (and would-be supervisors) working out what a doctorate is for in the modern knowledge economy, inside and outside academia. Supervisors will then come up with ideas for how they, their students and the university can add-value to the doctoral process.
12:00-12:30 – Plenary
Students and supervisors will come together to share their thoughts and solutions for making the doctoral experience valuable for everyone.
12:30-1:30 – Lunch
13:30-14:30 – UoN doctoral alumni presentations
14:30-15:00 – Panel discussion
