Images of Research 2017-18 winners announced!
Avenue gallery corridor exhibition in February
The winners of the Graduate School’s Images of Research (IoR) exhibition and competition 2017-18 have now been chosen! 38 images from UoN researchers, both postgraduate students and staff, were submitted, along with short abstracts, to illustrate a research project in an engaging way for a general audience. There were submissions from all Faculties and in a variety of disciplines, from science to literature, psychology to nursing.
There were two competitions – four winners chosen by our guest judge, David Stevens from UoN marketing, and a public vote. The ‘public’ votes were counted from those on paper at the launch and exhibition in February 2018 at Avenue gallery corridor and the travelling exhibitions in March/April, plus the 800+ online votes via the Research Support Hub! Invitation to the Annual Research Student Poster Competition 2018!
The Graduate School would like to invite you to their Annual Research Student Poster Competition 2018 on Tuesday 22nd May 2018, 10:45am to 2pm, in the Dialog Cafe, ground floor of Rockingham Library, Park Campus. The poster competition is a development opportunity for doctoral research students, who present their research on an A1 poster, giving short 1-1 verbal presentations alongside. YES Competition 2018
YES 2018 competition will be taking place this autumn.The call for applications is now open. YES is designed to develop business awareness and an understanding of entrepreneurship in UK postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers. This goal is achieved through a competition in which those participating prepare a business plan for a hypothetical company. Full details about this competition and how to apply, please see the link.
UnityDem Competition – Opportunity to win a Dream House for £5
A Northampton man who feels passionately about improving dementia care in the town has entered his home into a ‘Win a House’ competition. The four bedroom town house is located across the road from Abington Park and worth £600,000. Marty Pumbien and his partner Annie are hoping to sell the maximum number of 500,000 tickets. Part of the proceeds from the competition will help fund the UnityDem Centre, co-run by the University of Northampton. Entry fee is £5 for a raffle ticket and the competition closes at midnight on the 14th October.

Call for applications-UK 2018 Doctoral Researcher Awards.
The Association of British Turkish Academics (ABTA) announces the 2018 Doctoral Researcher Awards to promote and reward academic and scientific excellence among researchers pursuing doctoral degrees in the UK. The competition is open to all students and the deadline for applications is the 5th March 2018. For details about the competition, please see the link.
Images of Research: deadline extended to 29th November
If you haven’t entered Images of Research yet but wanted to, then we are pleased to announce that we have extended the deadline for submitting your image, summary and title. Don’t miss out on your chance to raise your research profile, engage a public audience and disseminate your research in an annual event that challenges all researchers, including postgraduate research students and academics, to illustrate their work with just one unique image. The submission deadline has been extended to Wednesday 29th November 2017. Open Access Week
We are holding a competition to find the best examples of where open access has benefited your research, if open access has made a difference to your work or research then we’d love to hear from you! All that’s required is a few minutes of your time, a short paragraph will suffice… though please don’t be limited by this!
The best judged entry will rewarded with a lovely bottle of champagne… and will featured on the staff intranet research page! All entries will also go into a draw for a further bottle of champagne! If champagne is not to your liking, then a £20 amazon voucher will be awarded instead!

Come along to a seminar on Research Data Management – Making your data count – maximising impact – 11 am to 12 pm – 24th of October at the Hub, Cottesbrooke, Park Campus. Note – this presentation uses images from the genocide memorial in Kigali, Rwanda that may be upsetting).
Professor Stephen Hawking has granted the University of Cambridge permission to make his thesis freely available Prof. Hawking’s ‘Properties of expanding universes’, published in 1966, is now available freely and openly to anyone in the world. The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Fellowship and Grant Competitions in Buddhist Studies
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) invites applications in the 2017-18 competition year of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Program in Buddhist Studies. In cooperation with the Foundation, ACLS offers an integrated set of fellowship and grant competitions supporting work to expand the understanding and interpretation of Buddhist thought in scholarship and society, to strengthen international networks of Buddhist studies, and to increase the visibility of innovative currents in those studies.
Deadline for submission of fellowship applications: November 15, 2017.
Deadline for institutional applications for New Professorships: January 10, 2018.

Call for Images – Graduate School’s Images of Research 2017-18
The call for the Graduate School’s Images of Research 2017-18 is now open! If you are a researcher (staff or student) at the University of Northampton, and would like to participate, all you need to do is to come up with a unique image that you can either create or photograph, the image should capture the essence of your research or an element of it, in a visual, artistic or photographic way, with a 150 word summary and a title. Open Access Week – 23rd to 29th October 2017
The theme for this year’s 10th International Open Access Week is “Open in order to…”
There are many benefits to open access, including greater visibility of research, increases in citations, and ensuring far greater access to research. HEFCE’s open access policy for REF2021 has seen the greatest shift in practice in terms of open access within the UK, and there are few of you who will not have been asked about uploading your accepted manuscripts to NECTAR! Whilst we realise this can sometimes be an arduous task for some, it is necessary. Rather than presenting to you once again the benefits of open access, we’d like to hear from you!
