Dr Ali Al-Sherbaz appearing on the BBC, The One Show
Our Research team from the Computing Department and Moulton College are developing a sensor to detect lameness in sheep. Associate Professor Dr. Ali Al-Sherbaz will be appearing on the BBC One – The One Show tonight at 7pm. Tune in to find out more about this research, how this infection costs UK farming about £80m/yr and whether the solution could lie in a ‘Fitbit’ for sheep.
External PhD Student… Need Resources?
Not based at Northampton and been frustrated that you can’t access that book that you so desparately need to complete your studies?
Go to https://www.sconul.ac.uk/sconul-access and fill in the online form using the drop down options.
- to state the type of student you are (e.g. PhD full-time, PhD part-time)
- where you’re a student (i.e. University of Northampton)
- it will then ask you to select an institution local to you where they’d like to access resources (it only lists those institutions in the scheme)
- a window then pops up with an “apply for access” button
- click it, fill in the rest of the information and the university at the other end will processes your application and allow you to borrow resources from their library.
A large number of Universities are part of this scheme.
In regards to inter library loans, the British Library will send journal articles anywhere, because they can send them via email via secure electronic delivery. Unfortunately, British Library inter library loan books have to be collected from the University of Northampton.
New Yammer Research Support Group
All staff have access to Yammer… Kind of like facebook for work… In order to give Researcher’s at our University a dedicated space for interaction, helpful files, presentations, links etc, a Research Support group has been created, including information on the REF and RDM. Feel free to join & access these resources! (https://www.yammer.com (log in with your Uni username and password)).
IT issues – Library Database A-Z down
We are aware that there is a problem with the A – Z List of Library databases today (3 June) . IT Services staff have been notified and the server has been rebooted. We are waiting to see if the list comes back up.
A workaround in the meantime is to Google the name of the database that you want to access, along with ‘login’, and you will usually get a hit with a link to the database login screen. Look for the ‘UK Federation’ login option and then you should be able to login with your UoN login.
Whilst this isn’t ideal, it should keep you going for now.

Moulton Research reaches Global Audience in the National Geographic!
Submitted by Wanda McCormick
If you pop down to your local newsagents today and flick through the latest August edition of the National Geographic magazine, you will find a striking image linked to one of our ongoing research projects here at the College. The image was taken by a professional photographer who visited the College last summer to document our ongoing conservation work with the photogenic but incredibly elusive harvest mouse! We have been investigating the ecological habits of this most charismatic of creatures as a means of prescribing pro-active conservation measures to ensure its survival in our green and pleasant countryside.
With a global circulation of around 7 million, this truly puts Moulton’s research on a global stage! To find out more about this and other research activities we undertake, why not check out: https://twitter.com/MoultonResearch
