Call For Papers: The SOTA annual postgraduate conference 2013
On the 19 – 20 September 2013, the University of Northampton School of the Arts will be holding its annual postgraduate conference. All students registered for PhDs at the School of the Arts are expected to submit twenty minute papers on their research areas, while Masters and MPhil students are strongly encouraged to do so.

Event report: LLS Research Summer School 2013
In keeping with its mission to fly the flag for practitioner research, Library and Learning Services (LLS) has this week presented its second biennial Research Summer School.
Designed to provide practitioners with the motivation, knowledge and tools to conduct effective research projects, the two day event was aimed at staff in libraries and learning services who were new to research or wanted to brush up on their research skills. Through a mix of talks, practical activities and networking opportunities, the event was a great opportunity for delegates to kick start their own research projects and share their research challenges with others in similar positions.

From Who Can Tell?…! to Such A Long Journey: New Radio Play Rehearsals Announced
On the evening of 5th June 2013, Dr Victor Ukaegbu and Dr Jumai Ewu hosted a very special re-union of the production team and cast members behind the 2008 JAWI Theatre collective production, Who Can Tell?…!.
This community based play was based on material from the oral history archives of the Northamptonshire Black History Association (NBHA) and gave theatrical voice to black people’s experiences of living and growing up in 1960s Northampton.

This one-day interdisciplinary symposium hosted by the School of the Arts brought together scholars from around the globe to revisit the concept of the personal as political and consider its effect on the perception and experience of space and place.
Call for papers: Food security conference on World Food Day
The 16th October 2013 is UN World Food Day. To tie in with this, the University of Warwick is holding a one-day conference, “Food (In)Security Research Network: International and trans-disciplinary perspectives”. Supported by BISA-PGN and GEM PhD School, the conference will be the starting point for a new multi-disciplinary postgraduate community focusing on issues and ideas relating to food security.
English and Creative Writing at the School of the Arts Summer Show

Runner up in the UN Graduate School poster competition 2013
On 8th May at the Graduate School Annual Poster Competition, Roshni was awarded a runners-up prize of £75 for her poster entitled “A Survey of Upper Limb Neurological Splinting Practice in the UK“. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Petford, presented her prize.
The aim of Roshni’s study was to determine the current practice of occupational therapist’s (OT’s) that use splinting for upper limb rehabilitation with stroke survivors. To achieve this a survey was sent to all OT’s who belong to the Specialist section for Neurological Practice (SSNP), working with stroke survivors to determine the nature of their practice. Data collected from the group of participants will serve to determine the devices and techniques used for the assessment and treatment process, as well as the nature of the clinical reasoning process and the factors that influence practice within the current health care climate.
Roshni is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy and can be contacted at the University of Northampton’s School of Health.

Supervisor Development Programme 2013/14
The university runs a development programme for supervisors who are new to research degree supervision, co-ordinated by Professor Ian Livingstone. It is a validated university postgraduate course and it is delivered as two modules – Workshops and Observation. It is a requirement of our research degree regulations that everyone who is new to supervision takes the first module – the workshops. The second module is optional but if you complete both you are awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Degree Supervision which you can count as one completion when putting together supervisory teams. Even if you have previously supervised research students, there may be some elements of the programme that you would find useful.
In 2013/14 the workshops will run 9.30-4.00 on Thursday 27th February 2014, Tuesday 4th March and Friday 7th March. There will be a further session of seminars led by participants – dates to be negotiated.
