Workshops for Research Degree Supervisors
We are running a series of workshops for research degree supervisors related to the stage that your pgr student has reached. These workshops will be a mix of information about the formal procedures with a discussion about how to support the student through this phase of their programme. The ‘early stages’ workshop is timed to coincide with student induction when you may have a student starting their research degree programme. Faculty of Business and Law Research Seminar: ‘Institutional Quality, Political Risk and Tourism: Evidence from Gravity Model’ 6th Feb 2019 13:00 to 14:00 TPod A (2nd Floor of Learning Hub)
Everyone welcome as Dr Thaana Ghalia investigates the role of institutional quality coupled with political risks, distance and socio-economic factors to explain tourist flow by applying the gravity model. We found that institutional quality and absence of conflict are driving factors in fostering tourism flows for both source and destination countries. Our finding suggests that institutional reform can help to boost the economies of countries with low- quality institutions. While institutional change is a positive development in its own right, our results suggest that it can also have important additional economic benefits for countries that are highly dependent on tourism. The first UoN Research Conference 2018 – a great success.
On the 20th to 21st June, The Graduate School and the Faculties held their first joint conference. Over two days we had over 40 oral presentations from postgraduate researchers and staff from across the University , displayed about 30 research posters and held our second 3-Minute Thesis competition, which was won by Emmanuel Offori-Attah, a postgraduate researcher in the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology.

The main conference was live streamed across the Web over the two days. Congratulations to all of those who took part in what was a very successful event.

REF Impact Workshop, Feb 14th

English & Creative Writing are hosting a REF Impact Workshop on February 14th with Professor Philip Martin (Emeritus Professor, Sheffield Hallam University, educational consultant with the HEA).
All are welcome at the workshop, which will take place in room MR5, Avenue Campus from 2-4pm.
Article: Introduction to research skills

I wrote an article “Introduction to research skills”, for the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) journal Information Professional. The article promoted and discussed the online tutorials I have developed with the Library and Information Research Group (LIRG).
SPSS workshops for Postgraduate Researchers
The SPSS 1 beginner’s workshop is now rescheduled for Monday 18th Dec from 2-4pm in the IT Training Room. This workshop is facilitated by Paul Rice and has two parts; the follow on workshop will be held on 8th January 2018 from 10-12. Please note that you need to have attended part one (or have the appropriate skills in SPSS) to attend part two. There will be homework to do between the two workshops.
SPSS 1 beginnner’s workshop takes place on 18 Dec 2017, from 14:00 to 16:00 in Library IT Training Room, Rockingham Library, Park Campus. Please use the link to book.

LLS Resources Week
Just a couple of weeks to go before LLS Resources Week takes place on both of our campuses.
This event is for everyone to enjoy and will include resource demonstrations from providers such as Sage, Taylor & Francis and Mintel, as well as supplier stands, competitions and free donuts (look out for Donuts & Digital Resources on the Tuesday).
Please come along and join in, encourage colleagues and students to sign up to some of the sessions and find out what digital resources are available to help them with their research.
There are timetables for both campuses – just follow the links within the timetables to book on any of the sessions that interest you. Whether you are a staff member, a student or a researcher, there really is something for everyone!

Images of Research: deadline extended to 29th November
If you haven’t entered Images of Research yet but wanted to, then we are pleased to announce that we have extended the deadline for submitting your image, summary and title. Don’t miss out on your chance to raise your research profile, engage a public audience and disseminate your research in an annual event that challenges all researchers, including postgraduate research students and academics, to illustrate their work with just one unique image. The submission deadline has been extended to Wednesday 29th November 2017.
