Supervisor Development Programme ~ 2022
The university runs a development programme for supervisors who are new to research degree supervision, co-ordinated by Professor Ian Livingstone. It is a validated university postgraduate course and it is delivered as two modules – Workshops and Observation. It is a requirement of our research degree regulations that everyone who is new to supervision takes the first module – the workshops. The second module is optional but if you complete both you are awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Degree Supervision which you can count as one completion when putting together supervisory teams. Even if you have previously supervised research students, there may be some elements of the programme that you would find useful.
In 2022 the workshops will be delivered on:
Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd September 2022 at the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus.

Postgraduate Researcher Award 2018 – winners’ reports
In 2018 The Graduate School launched the Postgraduate Researcher Award to provides up to £1,000 to support a research student in the pursuance of their research degree programme at the University of Northampton. The Award was available to full-time or part-time postgraduate research students at the University of Northampton. The award was to support and enhance research activity of various kinds (for example, additional travel costs, purchase of specialist equipment, researcher development). The first UoN Research Conference 2018 – a great success.
On the 20th to 21st June, The Graduate School and the Faculties held their first joint conference. Over two days we had over 40 oral presentations from postgraduate researchers and staff from across the University , displayed about 30 research posters and held our second 3-Minute Thesis competition, which was won by Emmanuel Offori-Attah, a postgraduate researcher in the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology.

The main conference was live streamed across the Web over the two days. Congratulations to all of those who took part in what was a very successful event.

Poster Competition winners!
The Graduate School’s 13th Annual Poster Competition for Postgraduate Researchers was held on Wednesday 22nd May in Rockingham Library, Park Campus. The event offered the students the opportunity to present their research in the form of a poster, practice their presentation skills to a non-specialist audience and a chance to win a prize of £100 or £75.
17 research students from different Faculties presented their posters, which were assessed by seven judges, a mix of University staff, academic and support staff. One first prize of £100 and three runners up prizes of £75 were chosen.
The winners were Charlotte Brooks from the Faculty of Health and Society who won the £100 first prize. The three other prizes of £75 were awarded to Amanda Ash from the Faculty of Health and Society, Frances Hudson and Shalini Bisani from the Faculty of Business and Law. Congratulations to all our winners.

Images of Research: deadline extended to 29th November
If you haven’t entered Images of Research yet but wanted to, then we are pleased to announce that we have extended the deadline for submitting your image, summary and title. Don’t miss out on your chance to raise your research profile, engage a public audience and disseminate your research in an annual event that challenges all researchers, including postgraduate research students and academics, to illustrate their work with just one unique image. The submission deadline has been extended to Wednesday 29th November 2017. Workshops for Research Degree Supervisors
New for this year, we are running a series of workshops for research degree supervisors related to the stage that your student has reached. These workshops will be a mix of information about the formal procedures with a discussion about how to support the student through this phase of their programme. The two ‘early stages’ workshops are timed to coincide with student induction when you may have a student starting their research degree programme. All workshops are equally appropriate for those new to supervision and for those experienced supervisors who need a refresher.
Supervising the early stages of a research degree

This workshop is intended for supervisors who are supervising a research degree student who is just starting. We will cover the formal requirements of the student and the supervisory team between initial enrolment and transfer. We will ensure that you are aware of the university’s but we will also have some discussion about how we can supervise students in these early stages. This workshop is equally appropriate for those new to supervision and for those experienced supervisors who need a refresher. The workshop will run again on Wed 14 March 2018.

Maintaining your research degree student’s momentum

This workshop will consider your strategies as a research degree supervisor for supporting your students through the middle stages of their research degree programme when some students run out of steam or lose focus. We’ll consider how you can help them to keep going, and we’ll think about the priorities for you and the student.
