Graduate School Update Day 2024 – Research Culture and Community at UON
Our Graduate School Update Day will run on Tuesday 4th June from 9:30-3:30pm. This annual event is for postgraduate researchers and their supervisors to come together to discuss topics of interest. This year we will be discussing the importance of developing and maintaining a strong research culture and community at UON – in supervision, in PGR development and in our research degree support across the university. Dr Neil Radford from the University of Derby is joining us for these discussions – Neil is the external examiner for UON’s Supervisor Development Programme.
The day will also include a session on research degree policy changes, an introduction to Images of Research 2024, which will be open for voting, and an overview of the upcoming Annual Research Conference later in June.
Lunch vouchers will be available for a free lunch for all attendees. You can attend for all or just part of the day. Please see the schedule below for full information and go to Gateway for booking your place.
Dr.App: NEW video support for postgraduate researchers & their supervisors
The Graduate School has purchased licences for Dr.App., designed for PGRs and staff supervising research degrees. Dr.App is an online video resource covering everything from working with supervisors and preparing for the viva examination to coping with stress and mental health challenges, from research impact to presentation and networking skills. It has content PGRs should find helpful at every stage of a research degree, in any discipline. For supervisors there are a number of videos on good, supportive supervision. More than 8 hours of videos are organised into topics for easy reference and are developed in association with academic consultant Prof John Wakeford of The Missenden Centre. Graduate School Update Day and 2022 PGR Poster Competition

The Graduate School is pleased to announce the first Update Day since June 2019. Annually, prior to the pandemic, we have held this day for postgraduate researchers and their supervisors to get together to discuss topics of relevance via workshops. And, just as importantly, to provide a space for both parties to meet, discuss issues and support each other – and enjoy a nice lunch.
This year’s workshop sessions will be on Equality and Diversity for Researchers and a discussion session on doctoral study and supervision in a post-Covid environment. Supervisor Development Programme ~ 2022
The university runs a development programme for supervisors who are new to research degree supervision, co-ordinated by Professor Ian Livingstone. It is a validated university postgraduate course and it is delivered as two modules – Workshops and Observation. It is a requirement of our research degree regulations that everyone who is new to supervision takes the first module – the workshops. The second module is optional but if you complete both you are awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Degree Supervision which you can count as one completion when putting together supervisory teams. Even if you have previously supervised research students, there may be some elements of the programme that you would find useful.
In 2022 the workshops will be delivered on:
Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd September 2022 at the University of Northampton’s Waterside Campus.

It is a validated university postgraduate course and it is delivered as two modules – Workshops and Observation. It is a requirement of our research degree regulations that everyone who is new to supervision takes the first module – the workshops. The second module is optional but if you complete both you are awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Degree Supervision which you can count as one completion when putting together supervisory teams. Even if you have previously supervised research students, there may be some elements of the programme that you would find useful.
In 2017/18 the workshops will be delivered on:
Tuesday 20th, Wednesday 21st and Thursday 22nd February 2018 at The University of Northampton;
Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th July 2018 at The University of Northampton
Staff from both The University of Northampton and Regent’s University London plus staff delivering our research degrees as international partners are welcome to join either delivery. You only need to join one three-day course, not both. No fees are paid by participants on this programme, but if you will be travelling away from your own university you will need to discuss travel and subsistence expenses with your line manager.

Seminar – The PhD journey: Exploring the supervision implications at key stages
Research degree students and supervisors are warmly invited to a research seminar on The PhD Journey, on Thursday 20th April at 10am in Sulgrave 029, Park Campus. The seminar will explore various anchor points across the research supervision process taking the student journey as the overarching framework. Themes of supervision pedagogy will explored as each milestone on the PhD journey is reached.
The seminar will be delivered by participants on the supervisor development programme: Mary Doveston; Rebecca Fakoussa; Steve O’Brien; Friedemann Schaber; Asieh Tabaghedi; Olinga Ta’eed.
