Graduate School Update Day 2024 – Research Culture and Community at UON
Our Graduate School Update Day will run on Tuesday 4th June from 9:30-3:30pm. This annual event is for postgraduate researchers and their supervisors to come together to discuss topics of interest. This year we will be discussing the importance of developing and maintaining a strong research culture and community at UON – in supervision, in PGR development and in our research degree support across the university. Dr Neil Radford from the University of Derby is joining us for these discussions – Neil is the external examiner for UON’s Supervisor Development Programme.
The day will also include a session on research degree policy changes, an introduction to Images of Research 2024, which will be open for voting, and an overview of the upcoming Annual Research Conference later in June.
Lunch vouchers will be available for a free lunch for all attendees. You can attend for all or just part of the day. Please see the schedule below for full information and go to Gateway for booking your place.
Graduate School Update Day & 3MT
Graduate School Update Day is on Friday June 9th and you are cordially invited to join us in the Town Hall for a formal session and follow-up discussions on the broad topic of Supportive Supervision – a session and discussion on how Supervisors can best support PGRs and how PGRs ensure they get the effective support that they need from their Supervisor. We are delighted to announce that Dr Paula Zwozdiak-Myers and Petra Buresova from Brunel University will be presenting in our morning session. Paula & Petra were involved in a fascinating study on doctoral researchers’ perceptions of supervisory relationships on their health and wellbeing. The session in the morning will be followed by lunch (provided) and prompt further discussions after lunch on supportive supervision at UON. Update Day will also feature our annual 3-Minute Thesis Competition at lunchtime – the first competition that we have held in-person since 2019.

When: Tuesday 24th May 2022 10:30am-4:15pm;
Where: CH105, First floor, Creative Hub, Waterside Campus
The Graduate School is pleased to announce the first Update Day since June 2019. Annually, prior to the pandemic, we have held this day for postgraduate researchers and their supervisors to get together to discuss topics of relevance via workshops. And, just as importantly, to provide a space for both parties to meet, discuss issues and support each other – and enjoy a nice lunch.
This year’s workshop sessions will be on Equality and Diversity for Researchers and a discussion session on doctoral study and supervision in a post-Covid environment. As well as Update Day, we’ll be holding our annual PGR Poster Competition. Please add the event into your calendars. For more information, the schedule and to book a place see the Gateway page.
Graduate School Update Day looks to the future for research students

Every year The Graduate School holds an ‘Update Day‘ where the focus is on topics of interest to supervisors and their postgraduate research students. This year, after an update on UoN ethics processes, a session on ‘Researcher Futures’ looks at career direction strategies beyond academia for researchers. In an employment landscape vastly different from that 20 years ago, research students often look to their supervisor for guidance on career support, even on non-academic choices. This workshop will help both supervisors and PGR students together to
- explore the pathways open to research degree graduates outside of academia;
- introduce techniques and resources that can support further career exploration and decision making;
- recognise potential in skills, experience, attributes and achievements whether the student wants a career in academia or, increasingly commonly, outside it.
