New research students join the Graduate School
A four day induction from 14th-17th October saw the Graduate School welcome a further 25 research degree students to the University of Northampton. Over the four days the students, from a wide range of disciplines, were introduced to the resources and services offered by the Graduate School and other departments across the University. They had the opportunity to present their research to each other and were given a warm welcome by University Services, Research Degree Boards and existing research students alike.
Many of our new research students are working professionals and academics, or are studying part time. Induction aims to welcome all new students, helping them to feel part of the University and giving them the perfect grounding for the long research degree road ahead.
Workshops for Early Career Researchers
The University of Northampton Graduate School are running an ECR Development Programme for staff who are “early-career researchers*. We kick off on October 24th with Professor Ian Livingstone’s ‘What it means to be a researcher’. All workshops are free to attend and all include lunch.
* For the purposes of this programme, we define early-career researchers as those members of University staff who are post-docs, have just completed a PhD, contract researchers, research assistants or research fellows in the early stages of their career

Our Development Days consist of a full day of workshops (usually three, plus lunch) for a specific stage of study. The Development Day programme begins again in the 2014-15 academic year.
All workshops are available for booking via the Eventbrite booking system, links shown in the attachments.

Workshop – Making an application to an NHS REC

Working in partnership AREC and HRA
This workshop is particularly suitable for students, or anyone making applications for review to an NHS REC. A step by step guide on how to make the application and a look at what can be done to facilitate better applications.
Part-Time Researcher programme running in September
Are you a research degree student studying part-time? If so, you might be interested to learn that the Graduate School are running a Part-Time Researcher’s Programme on Tuesday 17th September.

Call for papers for the Callaloo Postgraduate/Early Career Workshop: “Britain, Europe and the African Diaspora”.

On 27-30 November 2013, Callaloo will be hosting its annual conference in Europe for the first time, at The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH). Graduate School Workshops online on NILE
If you missed one of the 2012-13 Graduate School development workshops, or want to refresh your memory, do take a look on NILE at our training site “RES001 Postgraduate Research Training”. You’ll find Powerpoint slides, associated documents and a few videos for many of the workshops we ran this year.
Log into Nile, choose ‘Training materials’ from the left hand menu, then ‘Research Training Workshop Materials’. Also in the ‘Training materials’ content area you will find resources in the ‘Saturday Schools’ and ‘Induction’ folders.
RES001 also contains a folder item entitled “Online Research Training”. This folder contains our Epigeum training resources on Research Methods. These are excellent online training tools which you can dip into as and when you are able. Why not take a look? We will shortly be making Epigeum workshops in Ethics available online so watch this space!

Supervisor Development Programme 2013/14
The university runs a development programme for supervisors who are new to research degree supervision, co-ordinated by Professor Ian Livingstone. It is a validated university postgraduate course and it is delivered as two modules – Workshops and Observation. It is a requirement of our research degree regulations that everyone who is new to supervision takes the first module – the workshops. The second module is optional but if you complete both you are awarded the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Degree Supervision which you can count as one completion when putting together supervisory teams. Even if you have previously supervised research students, there may be some elements of the programme that you would find useful.
In 2013/14 the workshops will run 9.30-4.00 on Thursday 27th February 2014, Tuesday 4th March and Friday 7th March. There will be a further session of seminars led by participants – dates to be negotiated.
