Workshop: Communication and Presentation Skills on Tuesday 20th
Tuesday 20th November: 16:30-18:30 MY120 Avenue campus.
How good are your presentation & communication skills? Do you fear speaking in public or have trouble explaining your research succinctly? As a research student you are required to do many different types of presentation. And as a researcher good communication skills are vital. We will look at ways to give your communication skills a boost, explain the range of presentations you may have to do within the University and externally, as well as tackle some of your fears and worries to inspire confidence.
This workshop is most relevant for pre-transfer students or those not experienced in making presentations.

Mission groups: are they worth the cost?
Is membership of a mission group such as the Russell Group, 1994 group, Million+ or University Alliance worth the financial cost? The last year has seen a number of UK universities either switch from one mission group to another or withdraw altogether.
The University of Northampton has recently left the ‘Million+’ group of modern universities, with Vice Chancellor Professor Nick Petford stating:
“We can’t really see what value a mission group offers us anymore”. “We’d rather be independent and pick and choose the universities we want to work with”. “Million+, as a think tank, has a useful role to play. But it has almost become a millstone around our neck.”

Rob Hopkin is a live, big event, TV director. He is responsible for ‘Question Time’ and had masterminded Four BBC General Election Programmes. Hear him and meet him on the very day he does Question Time live from Corby!

RSS tips #2: subscribe to a YouTube playlist
While blogging about University of Warwick’s new Just About… channel, I was surprised to learn that Youtube doesn’t offer an RSS option for subscribing to playlists. But I found a workaround – read on for details.
‘Just About…’: YouTube researcher tips from University of Warwick
University of Warwick library have launched Just About…, a new YouTube channel for sharing short tips and guides for researchers, based on their information skills workshops. Among the initial offerings is a guide to setting up alerts in Web of Knowledge and Google, which any researcher may find useful.
Don’t forget that University of Northampton research training videos are also available through the NILE RES001 module – new additions are posted to our Training category.

Postgraduate Research Symposium: Moulton College
Open to all staff from Moulton College and the University of Northampton, The Postgraduate Research Symposium will be held on Tuesday 18th December in M1 (Higher Education Centre, Main Site) from 2:30-5pm.
Papers include “The use of the aqua-treadmill in the rehabilitation of equine lameness”, “The use of linear boundary features by macro-moths in intensive agricultural landscapes”, “Behavioural ecology of harvest mice upon reintroduction to the wild” and much more.
Scientific writing and publishing workshop for researchers in the life sciences
19 November 2012 – 20 November 2012 at the University of Sussex, Falmer, Brighton
Vitae and Macmillan Science Communication (MSC) are running this intensive workshop to train life science researchers to prepare and publish high quality research papers in international, peer-reviewed journals.
Training is led by editors of Nature journals, covering the writing and publishing process from start to finish. Using short lectures punctuated by practical exercises and group discussions, the two day workshop will focus on the publishing issues that researchers face today.
Training runs from 10am – 6pm on the first day and 9am to 5pm on the second day. There will be a networking dinner and accommodation for those interested.
Cost £650 for 2-days, £750 inc overnight stay.
