Season’s Greetings from SOTA Research!

The last two weeks at SOTA research have been hectic but good, with three events which rounded off the term in style. Chaired by Dr Sonya Andermahr, on 11th December 2014, Dr Silvia Pellicer-Ortin from the University of Zaragoza, Spain, gave a talk on ‘Emerging Voices: British Jewish Women Writers’ to English staff, MA and BA students.
Inaugural John Clare Memorial Lecture with Professor Nick Groom a Success!
On Friday 12th December, the English Division at the University of Northampton School of the Arts was very pleased to welcome Professor Nick Groom (University of Exeter) to give the Inaugural John Clare Memorial Lecture. Accompanied by mulled wine and mince pies, the event was a real opportunity for the School to celebrate the legacy of John Clare and open its doors to members of the John Clare Trust, the John Clare Society and Sue Shields and Kathryn Parsons, artists who have been involved in the exhibition, ‘UnEarthed: John Clare’.

2015 Skills Development Days for UN research students and Early Career Researchers
From January to April the Graduate School are holding 4 different Development Days for PGRs, two of which are also open to Early Career Researchers working at UN. For PGRs preparing for Transfer, a Pre-Transfer Development Day is running on January 15th and a Personal Effectiveness Day on March 3rd looks at managing your supervisory (and other professional) relationships and handling the ups and downs of doctoral study.
For Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and PGRs we have a Presentation Skills Day in February, featuring experienced and highly effective trainer and researcher, Dr Adair Richards. This day is a must for all of you preparing to deliver conference and seminar papers in the spring and summer. Lastly we are holding a Publishing Day for support on publishing & writing for academic journals.

Easier access to resources off campus
Scholarly Systems Manager Mike Aynsworth explains the work his team has been doing to improve access to library resources:
Work has been carried out to make off campus access to the major library databases the same as on campus access. This has been achieved by using Ezproxy, an authentication service which mimics on campus access for those using resources off campus. Read the rest of this entry
Doctoral Open Days at the British Library
The British Library are now advertising the latest round of open days for PhD students. Full details are on the British Library website, but dates are as follows:
- English and Drama – Monday 19th January 2015
- Digital Scholarship – Friday 23rd January
- Music – Friday 30th January
- Art and Design – Friday 6th February
- Media, Cultural Studies and Journalism – Friday 6th February
- History 1 – Monday 16th February
- History 2 – Friday 20th February
- Social Sciences – Monday 23rd February
- African and Asian Studies – Friday 27th February
It costs £5 to attend each open day but for that you will also get lunch.

Should you trust that publisher?
It has been a bit of a week (already) for publishers of dubious intent to clutter my Inbox.
I must clearly be a researcher of world leading renown (not) to be so sought after. SciencePG has this very morning invited me not only to propose a special issue of a journal but to guest edit it too! Yesterday it was a different publisher and I have no doubt there will be further invitations coming along soon.
Some of these publishers appear to be very plausible. They offer open access, short lead times, ‘free’ submission and they may even allow me to retain my own copyright. So far so good. The sting in the tail comes from the large fees demanded on publication, the absence of any rigorous peer review process and the poor quality of the dissemination. Read the rest of this entry
Qualitative Methodology: Interviews, Focus Groups, Research with Children
Dr Jane Callaghan will be running two qualitative methodology workshops for the Graduate School on Thursday 4th December.
The morning workshop will look in depth at both interviewing participants and using focus groups. The afternoon workshop will cover the ethical and practical issues of working with children. Both workshops will be held in Sunley Conference Centre.
The workshops are open to any student currently registered on a research degree programme or early career researchers at the University of Northampton.

Hugh Kearns returns to Northampton: a new Research Supervision Masterclass
On February 13th 2015 we are welcoming back Australian researcher & educator, Hugh Kearns. Hugh is recognised internationally and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and, for the second time, Northampton!
In February 2014 Hugh delivered the Seven Secrets of Successful Research Students for Supervisors and now he is back, by popular demand, with another workshop for University of Northampton Supervisors:
