Upcoming workshop: Developing a research track record on a shoestring

Kearns2On February 8th 2017 we are welcoming back researcher & educator, Hugh Kearns, who will be running a workshop for academic staff and researchers “Developing a research track record on a shoestring”. Hugh is recognised internationally and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and, now for the fourth time, Northampton.

Academics and researchers are constantly being told to increase their research outputs if they want to get promoted or funded, but it becomes a catch 22 when you can’t do much research because you have no money, but no one will give you money because you haven’t done enough research. Despite this situation there are ways to build a research track record that require less money and can give you the start you need to build a decent track record (or even just to keep your head above water!). Kearns2On March 11th 2016 we are welcoming back researcher & educator, Hugh Kearns. Hugh is recognised internationally and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and, now for the third time, Northampton.

Hugh is running two workshops, one for supervisors on Giving Good Feedback, focusing on giving positive feedback, providing criticism without crushing the recipient, varying the type of feedback depending on the student’s stage, what to do when your student doesn’t listen… and more. Graduate School Workshops in February 2015

mature students photoWe have a range of workshops running in February, open to Postgraduate Research Students and Early Career Researchers at UN.  They include short 2 hour workshops in qualitative and quantitative data analysis, a CV workshop and bibliometrics. Longer sessions include a presentation skills day for those of you presenting at conferences this year, plus Hugh Kearns will be visiting us again to help you tackle self-sabotage – procrastination, ‘too busy’ syndrome and disorganisation. Hugh Kearns’ books for researchers now in the library!

7_secrets_flat turbochargeEarlier in the year the Graduate School were given the opportunity to host a day of workshops for Research Students and Supervisors called “The Seven Secrets of Successful Research Students”, led by Australian researcher developer, Hugh Kearns. Hugh regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard and Stanford and has published a number of books on the subject of completing a doctorate.

Two of his books will shortly be available in the University Library – “Seven Secrets of Highly Successful Research Students” and “Turbocharge your Writing”. Both books are packed full of tips and valuable recommendations, to help research students progress through their research degree.

We have 4 places left for Hugh Kearn’s Research Student workshop “Seven secrets” which will be held at Sunley Conference Centre next Tuesday 11th. Hugh Kearns is recognised internationally as a public speaker, educator and researcher and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard and Stanford. Workshop: ‘Seven secrets’ for research students

Kearns2On 11th February 2014, we have an excellent external trainer coming to the University to run an afternoon workshop for research students. Hugh Kearns is a lecturer and researcher at Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia, and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard and Stanford. We are fortunate enough to have been able to book him!

From 13:30-16:30 Hugh will be running “The Seven Secrets of Successful Research Students“. This workshop describes the key habits that Hugh’s research and experience with thousands of students shows will make a difference to how quickly and easily students complete a research degree.
