2015-16 Changes to postgraduate research degree documentation

Top lodgeA number of changes have taken place to the regulations, policies, guidance and forms for postgraduate research (PGR) programmes. The student and supervisor toolkits now reflect all of the changes. This post will explain the changes and provide links to new content.

Regulations and policies

The overarching regulations for all PGR programmes are now incorporated in to the Academic Regulations of the University (approved by the Senate in July 2015). The Research Degrees Handbook has now been replaced by a series of Postgraduate Research Policies (also approved by Senate in July 2015) and these are now your source of information on your programme. The content is either the same as the old handbook or has been changed to bring the policies in line with our most up to date practices.
The regulations and policies cover PhD, D.Prof.Prac, DBA, PhD by Published Works, Practice-based PhDs in The Arts and MPhil.

Guidance and forms

All of the guidance documents and forms have also been updated. The new versions are all marked 2015-16 in the header. RDBs and RDC will now only accept the latest versions of the forms. You can download them whenever and wherever you need them from the toolkits.

Student and Supervisor Toolkits

During the summer, the Student Toolkit and Supervisor Toolkit have both been updated to include the new policies, updated guidance and forms. Please bookmark your Toolkit or add it to your favourites. The toolkits really will answer most questions about supervision, registration, ethics approval, transfer, study breaks, submission and examination.

The future

We are currently working to implement an integrated online PGR management system. The system will be launched in 2016 and will support PGR supervision, development, progression, examination, committees and ethics approval. Students and supervisors will have access to their records and will be able to log supervision, complete online forms and book development workshops online.

I hope you find the updated toolkits useful and I will post more about the new system in due course.
