FRESHPPACT Winner of the UON Images of Research 2021-22 by Oluwaseyi Omoloso

Dr Cathy Smith, Dean of Research, Impact and Innovation, announced the winners of the 2021-2022 Images of Research competitions yesterday at the UON Annual Research Conference. Congratulations to the winner of the main competition, Oluwaseyi Omoloso from B&L, chosen by our Guest Judge Haley Morris-Cafiero from Art and

Desire Lines was the runner-up, Peter Jones

Design. Oluwasyi’s image was submitted in collaboration with Ebenezer Laryea, Amin Hosseinian Far and Adrian Pryce and was entitled FRESHPPACT: Levelling our Mounting Plastic Problem (above).

Haley’s runner-up was Dr Peter Jones from FAST, with his image Desire Lines of Physical Activity (right). Images with their abstracts can be seen in the catalogue of entries below.

Haley Morris-Cafiero explained her choice of winning images from the 23 entries “Oluwaseyi Omoloso’s image was selected as the winning image because its use of formal design to accentuate the topic of the research of the plastic pollution problem in Ghana. By placing the subject centrally in the frame, the other shapes in the photograph stress the overwhelming physicality of the plastic. The abstract discusses the solutions for the plastic problem and the aesthetic qualities of the image is very bright and optimisitic. ” Haley said of Peter Jones’s image and abstract “The composition of Peter Jones’ image bridges the image with the research. By placing the viewer at the entry point of the line carved in the landscape, Jones positions our body to move forward. The image aligns well with the abstract as it visualises the research of desire lines and green environments.”

The second competition was a popular public vote, which had over 2000 votes. First place went to image number 12 Representations of Algeria in Selected Literary Works from 1807 to 2012 by Amatou Allah Soumeya Slimani, with runner up, image number 13, Emma Whewell with “We’re all working together; that’s the secret (by Sam Walton)“. All images and abstracts can be seen in the catalogue below. Congratulations and thanks goes to all our winners and entrants.
