March 2022 PGR Induction: A warm welcome to our new postgraduate researchers
A four day induction from 7-10th March saw us welcome a further 24 postgraduate researchers to the University of Northampton.
The 4-day biannual Induction Programme is run by The Graduate School in October and March and is compulsory for all research students starting out on their PhD or MPhil. The Induction aims to launch PGRs into their studies by offering them a variety of workshops and talks, including research degree processes and procedures, skills development, open access, library resources, EDI and research integrity. The students also gave presentations on their research topic, had an induction into their Faculty and met members of staff at the University who will support them along the way.

Call for Entries; Graduate School Research Poster Competition 2022
The Graduate School has launched the call for entries for the 15th Annual Research Poster Competition and the call for entries closes on May 3rd. The competition is open to all PGRs at UON. Posters will be displayed digitally in an exhibition at Waterside, with an in-person judging session, on May 24th at Graduate School Update Day. The competition will be held from 12:15pm through to prize giving at 3:30pm.
The aim of the event is for PGRs to create a digital poster that explains their research to a mixed audience of non-subject specialists. At whatever stage in the research process you are, do take this opportunity to share your work with others and gain valuable feedback. Our latest newsletter has just been published, featuring events, seminars, new initiatives and training for PGRs and Supervisors. You can access this and the backlist in the Graduate School Yammer File store.
Compulsory online courses for PGRs
If you are a PhD or MPHIL student at UON but have not yet applied for Transfer, please note that there are 3 compulsory elements to your doctorate which you need to satisfy before you can progress through Transfer.
- Induction is the first. You must have attended a PGR Induction in either October or March.
- and 3. The other compulsory elements comprise two online courses, Becoming an Ethical Researcher and Research Integrity (UK) Second Edition – Core course. These courses are fully online, you can access them in your own time, working at your own pace.
It makes sense to pass these courses before you consider applying for Transfer and it is best to start soon after your Induction. So click on the links above and please make sure to read the instructions for access. If you have any questions please contact Simone Apel in the Graduate School.
The process is slightly different for our Professional Doctorate students. Your induction runs at the start of your facilitated modules and the compulsory online courses are embedded into the assessment of the facilitated modules for DProfPrac students, with DBA students completing the courses at the beginning of the thesis module.
The two compulsory courses are accompanied by a number of other optional online courses in research methods and literature review. So do take a look and see what is available for you – access is via Gateway (under the menu ‘Online courses’).

Dust off your cameras, dig out your sketchbook – Images of Research is back in 2022!
The Graduate School’s Images of Research (IoR) competition is back! The Call for Images is now open, so, if you are a researcher (staff or research student) at the University of Northampton, why not take part? Pick up your camera or paintbrush and produce a unique image which captures the essence of your research, or an element of your research, in a visual, artistic or photographic way. Top that off with a snappy title and 150 word summary and that is all you need to do to participate. See the IoR 2021-22 Rules and Guidelines for how to apply.
This year’s IoR will, again, be a double competition, where viewers can vote for their top three favourites and an expert judge will also choose their top three. Entries (see below) must be emailed to Simone Apel by the extended close date of March 31st 2022.

The Graduate School have launched a new series of fortnightly newsletters, published every other Thursday. These replace the Word format Graduate School Notices document. The new update will have the same notices and updates but will feature more news, features and events, relating to Graduate School operations, researcher development, information for PGRs and Supervisors, research degree notices, seminars and events running across the university and call for papers.
The first newsletter was published on October 28th, with fortnightly issues. If you have any item you would like us to consider please send content and contact details to simone.apel@northampton.ac.uk by noon on the Tuesday before publication. Back copies can be found in the Files in Graduate School Yammer.
Annual Research Conference 2020
We are delighted that we have been able to modify the University of Northampton’s Annual Research Conference in 2020 and deliver it online. The Conference includes much of the usual format, although we’ve taken the decision to postpone the ‘Bake your Research’ competition until we are back face-to-face on campus. David’s top tips for being productive at home
I’ve been having real difficulty concentrating whilst working at home. I find it hard to start tasks, my eyes are sore, a 5-day week feels daunting and I feel anxious when I don’t complete the tasks I planned to do. I miss going to work!
