Graduate School workshops in March

March hareMarch (and spring!) isn’t far away, so here is a quick rundown of the Graduate School workshops happening next month. Q Methodology is a research method used to study people’s “subjectivity” (their viewpoint) and Roshni Khatri will be running an introductory workshop to Q Methodology.

Personal Effectiveness Day focuses on negotiation, conflict handling skills, with strategies to handle the doctoral ‘roller coaster’. Quantitative Data Analysis 1 covers basic data analysis and variability and Dr Miggie Pickton and Nick Dimmock look at Open Access and the implications for your research. SRHE Professional Development Programme – workshops for researchers

The SRHE have some valuable workshops coming up for researchers (including research students) – Research Approaches and Methods on Wednesday 18th February, a one day writing retreat on Friday 20 February and Demystifying and Preparing for the Doctoral Viva on Wednesday 4th March. Other workshops coming up later include Peer Review – a Workshop for Newer Researchers, An Introduction to Constructivist Techniques and Publishing Academic Articles: A Way Through the Maze, to name a few. For more information about SRHE workshops for researchers see the Upcoming Events page and look for the workshops labelled “Network – Professional Development Programme”.

All workshops cost just £60 for non members and are free for members. Full time research students can join SRHE for as little as £35.

 

New career planner for researchers

Research Careers front coverJobs.ac.uk, the UK based online careers and jobs bank for universities, research institutions, commercial and public sector employers, has announced a new tool in its repertoire. It’s an excellent Career Development Toolkit for doctoral students and research staff, written by Clare Jones, an experienced researcher careers professional at the University of Nottingham. 2015 Skills Development Days for UN research students and Early Career Researchers

Graduate School WorkshopsFrom January to April the Graduate School are holding 4 different Development Days for PGRs, two of which are also open to Early Career Researchers working at UN. For PGRs preparing for Transfer, a Pre-Transfer Development Day is running on January 15th and a Personal Effectiveness Day on March 3rd looks at managing your supervisory (and other professional) relationships and handling the ups and downs of doctoral study.

For Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and PGRs we have a Presentation Skills Day in February, featuring experienced and highly effective trainer and researcher, Dr Adair Richards. This day is a must for all of you preparing to deliver conference and seminar papers in the spring and summer. Lastly we are holding a Publishing Day for support on publishing & writing for academic journals.

Publishing Academic Articles: A workshop by SRHE

SrhelogoSRHE, the Society of Research into Higher Education, has a training programme aimed at newer researchers; those who are studying for a doctorate and early career researchers.

On 12th November, Dr Karen Smith from the University of Greenwich and Ian White from publisher Routledge, Taylor and Francis will be running a workshop entitled “Publishing Academic Articles: A Way Through the Maze“. The workshop will be held at SRHE’s London headquarters in Collier Street.

ESRC seminar on Youth Mental Health

The University of Greenwich are delivering a series of seminars on Youth Mental Health and Stigma. The first seminar takes place in Nottingham on December 12th and there is a very exciting line up of speakers. The seminars are designed to be of interest to both academics and practitioners.

Workshop: Finding Resources on the Web

Graduate School WorkshopsNick Dimmock, Research Information Specialist in Research Support, LLS, will be running “Finding Resources on the Web” on Thursday, 30 October 2014 from 11:00 to 13:00 in the TPod, Rockingham Library, Park Campus.

Open to all research students and early career researchers, the workshop will focus on ways to ensure the information you find is useful and usable.

NECTAR and Resources on the Web: Two new workshops for PGRs & ECRs

Graduate School WorkshopsTwo brand new workshops for UN research students and early career researchers will run in October, headed up by Nick Dimmock, Research Information Specialist for LLS.

Making the most of NECTAR  will run on 15th October from 11:00-13:00 and Finding resources on the web follows on Thursday, 30 October from 11:00 to 13:00. Both workshops will be held in the TPOD, Rockingham Library on Park Campus. Click on the links above to book your place.
