Grounded Theory Forum – 12th February

The fifth Grounded Theory Forum is on Wednesday 12th February, from 1-3pm, in MX7 meeting room on Park Campus. The subject for discussion is the adaptability of grounded theory.
Glaser and Strauss (1967), in their original text stated that GT strategies should be used flexibly – a perspective also shared by Charmaz when she stated that she views ‘GT methods as a set of principles and practices, not as prescription or packages’ (2006, p9). So how far can you adapt it before it is no longer grounded theory?

Prize winning presence at BPS conference

We are very proud to announce that at the recent British Psychological Society’s Psychology of Women’s Section (POWS) Conference, Stephen Symons, a third year, in the Psychology department was awarded the POWS undergraduate prize for his dissertation entitled Discursive constructions of UK swingers’ self-identities and practices in a culturally gendered mononormative context. He presented an outstanding poster together with a team of colleagues who also presented at the conference from the Division of Psychology and the School of Health and the Centre for Health and Wellbeing research.

Runner up in the UN Graduate School poster competition 2013
On 8th May at the Graduate School Annual Poster Competition, Roshni was awarded a runners-up prize of £75 for her poster entitled “A Survey of Upper Limb Neurological Splinting Practice in the UK“. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Petford, presented her prize.
The aim of Roshni’s study was to determine the current practice of occupational therapist’s (OT’s) that use splinting for upper limb rehabilitation with stroke survivors. To achieve this a survey was sent to all OT’s who belong to the Specialist section for Neurological Practice (SSNP), working with stroke survivors to determine the nature of their practice. Data collected from the group of participants will serve to determine the devices and techniques used for the assessment and treatment process, as well as the nature of the clinical reasoning process and the factors that influence practice within the current health care climate.
Roshni is a Senior Lecturer in Occupational Therapy and can be contacted at the University of Northampton’s School of Health.

On 8th May at the Graduate School Annual Poster Competition, Nutmeg was awarded a runners-up prize of £75 for her poster entitled “The Prevention of Inpatient Violence and Aggression: Patient and Staff Perceptions”. The Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Petford, presented her prize.
Nutmeg is undertaking a research project, jointly funded by the University of Northampton and St. Andrew’s Healthcare. Most of her time is spent at St. Andrew’s, where she is part of the research team. The focus of her research is on the prevention of inpatient violence and aggression. This is of particular interest to her, having spent two years working as a mental health nurse in forensic services, where preventing patient aggression was an important part of the role.

Workplace Wellbeing Event by our School of Health

The School of Health at The University of Northampton presents, in association with NHS Northamptonshire, a Workplace Wellbeing Event incorporating The Peggie Kellam Memorial Lecture. The event will be held on Thursday 23rd May 2013 from 10.30am to 2.30pm at Sunley Management Centre, Park Campus, the University of Northampton.
The Programme of Events will incorporate the Peggie Kellam Memorial Lecture presented by Colonel A P Finnegan, followed by our keynote speaker, Professor Jamie Hacker Hughes. This year’s event will examine issues relating to work life balance, occupational stress and mental health within the armed forces and other professions.
Additional speakers will include Neville Davies, Paul West & Claire Zambuni — Fishing for Heroes. Lunch will be provided

Grounded Theory Forum

In the first meeting of the Grounded Theory Forum, held on April 24th, we discussed the way forward for the forum and generated some exciting ideas, including a GT blog, conference and journal. A wide ranging discussion took place on the different versions of GT and we plan to take this forward to the next meeting, on June 26th, when the second half will be given over to discussing Heath and Cowley’s 2004 paper debating the differences between Glaser and Strauss (reference below).
