Visual Innovation: A Methods Workshop #Visual16 – Tuesday 22 November 2016

BSA Postgraduate Forum & Visual Methods Study Group

Being innovative and original is a fundamental part of what we strive for and do as postgraduate students.  We all seek to create new knowledge- be that through method or design.   This event is for us to share, try out and discuss imaginative ideas and practices with each other in a productive, interactive workshop. This event is co-hosted by the BSA Postgraduate Forum and the BSA Visual Methods Study group and offers a practical and exciting opportunity to see the generation, communication and dissemination of participatory and visual methods. Northamptonshire Local Nature Partnership “Valuing Local Nature”

Posted on behalf of Prof Jeff Ollerton:

This free half day conference aims to highlight the true value that local nature provides to individuals, communities and businesses through ‘ecosystem services’. By adopting this approach, it is clear to see the cross sector benefits to public health, economic growth, flood risk management and more; and begs the question, “what does local nature do for you?”. Beware of bogus academic conferences

I have been made aware of postgraduate research students being targeted by bogus (fake) conference organisers. Early career academics are asked for payment to attend and/or speak at conferences that do not exist. There are blogs and websites that report bogus conferences such as Scholarly Open Access and Bogus Conferences.
Before you commit to attending a conference, discuss it with your supervisor – part of their role is to help you to plan your development. Also, research the conference organiser, look into any badges of authenticity they display on the website and don’t be lured by conferences that are not organised by known, reputable societies or institutions. Other bloggers have provided advice: Journalism Research News, Academia, American Psychological Association

Gateway is our online postgraduate research (PGR) management system. The objectives of the system are to:

  • Provide a shared, web-based record system for PGR students, their supervisors, school research leaders and the Graduate School;
  • Provide electronic records of supervision meetings;
  • Replace paper forms and signatures with electronic workflows and sign-off for all registration, progression and examination processes;
  • Provide online booking and records of training and development, accessible to students and supervisors;
  • Maintain support and contact with students and supervisors in any location;
  • Give access using existing usernames and passwords.

Conference announcement: Interdisciplinary research with children, young people and families

Submitted by Dr. Faith Tucker

Interdisciplinary research with children, young people and families: crossing boundaries, sharing stories

Wednesday 7th September 2016, 09.30-16.30

Newton building, Avenue Campus

Boundary-crossing research methods, projects, debates and collaborations are increasingly valued and fostered by research funders, and are increasingly understood to produce rich, impactful and important research, but can also cause interdisciplinary tensions and challenges.  In these contexts the conference will bring together researchers from a range of disciplines to explore: (1) collaboration between different academic disciplines; (2) the development of collaborative research methods and practices; (3) interactions between different institutions’ ways of working, and (4) new interdisciplinary ways of thinking/writing about children, youth and families.  Professor Claire Freeman (University of Otago) will be giving a keynote address.  Details of how to register for the conference can be found here.

For further information, please contact Dr Faith Tucker (faith.tucker@northampton.ac.uk).

Transfer seminar: Contemporary Art and the Liminal Space: Refuge for the divine in an empirical world?

Please note venue change to W23a, Walgrave building, Avenue Campus

You are invited to view Adam Ghani’s work and attend his transfer seminar entitled Contemporary Art and the Liminal Space: Refuge for the divine in an empirical world? on June 14th, 2016 in W23a, Walgrave building, Avenue Campus.

Adam will be screening his practical work on loop, projecting several montages from 10am and his seminar will commence at 1pm in the same venue. All are welcome.

Adam’s practice led research aims to explore if the idea of the liminal state (the in-between, the transitional) has ‘divine’ resonance in an atheistic age, through contemporary art practices.
