Masters in Clinical Research poster conference

On Friday 16th January 2015 from 10am-2pm, in the Dialogue Cafe, Rockingham Library, Park Campus, the first cohort of students undertaking the Masters in Clinical Research will be presenting the results of their clinical audits in poster form. So if you are interested in clinical audit and/or the Masters in Clinical Research it’s an event not to missed! Do come along to support our students.
A new year’s resolution for PGRs…. start planning your career!
In the olden days a postdoc could expect a job for life in academia, possibly working his or her way through a logical academic career progression, right up to a professorship. But sadly, in the 2010s, this could turn out to be a career path limited to the very few and, arguably, the lucky! Of course, there are always those who do not wish for a career in academia and, for them, the outside world beckons with a plethora of jobs and career paths which are as diverse as the postdocs applying for them.
A Times Higher Education article, published just before Christmas, points out that a PhD alone may not be enough. Picking up transferable skills from training opportunities, broadening experience and knowledge, increasing experience of team working and leadership and the ability to assess and promote one’s own achievements will all help to construct the highly transferable CV that non-academic employers are looking for.

2015 Skills Development Days for UN research students and Early Career Researchers
From January to April the Graduate School are holding 4 different Development Days for PGRs, two of which are also open to Early Career Researchers working at UN. For PGRs preparing for Transfer, a Pre-Transfer Development Day is running on January 15th and a Personal Effectiveness Day on March 3rd looks at managing your supervisory (and other professional) relationships and handling the ups and downs of doctoral study.
For Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and PGRs we have a Presentation Skills Day in February, featuring experienced and highly effective trainer and researcher, Dr Adair Richards. This day is a must for all of you preparing to deliver conference and seminar papers in the spring and summer. Lastly we are holding a Publishing Day for support on publishing & writing for academic journals.

Qualitative Methodology: Interviews, Focus Groups, Research with Children
Dr Jane Callaghan will be running two qualitative methodology workshops for the Graduate School on Thursday 4th December.
The morning workshop will look in depth at both interviewing participants and using focus groups. The afternoon workshop will cover the ethical and practical issues of working with children. Both workshops will be held in Sunley Conference Centre.
The workshops are open to any student currently registered on a research degree programme or early career researchers at the University of Northampton.

Hugh Kearns returns to Northampton: a new Research Supervision Masterclass
On February 13th 2015 we are welcoming back Australian researcher & educator, Hugh Kearns. Hugh is recognised internationally and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and, for the second time, Northampton!
In February 2014 Hugh delivered the Seven Secrets of Successful Research Students for Supervisors and now he is back, by popular demand, with another workshop for University of Northampton Supervisors:

Next Grounded Theory Forum – 10th December 2014

The Grounded Theory Forum will meet next Wednesday, the 10th December from 1-3pm, in SE204, Senate Building, Park Campus. The planned topic is coding in constructivist grounded theory.

Call for Papers: The Psychology of Emotion – A new student conference
Four doctoral students from the School of Psychology have been awarded funding from the UN Innovation Fund to run a student conference entitled Exploring the Nature of Emotion and Feeling; Critical Issues and Future Directions in Emotion and Feeling Based Research.
The conference will be held on April 8th 2015. Aiming to provide a friendly and welcoming environment where students can explore the nature of emotion and feeling, it aims to critically consider how this shapes our understanding of emotion today. Key themes in emotion and feeling based literature will be examined, providing students will the opportunity to consider future directions of research in this area.
A call for papers and posters has been announced for doctoral students to participate, with the first call for papers deadline 30th November. Final date for submissions February 15th 2015.
Would you like some free training in image-elicitation methods in the social sciences?
If you are a research student, early career researcher or just wish to develop your social science methodological expertise you might be interested to know that The Open University is offering free, ESRC-funded, on-line advanced training on image-elicitation methods.
Professor Helen Lomax, from UN, is working with colleagues at the OU to deliver the training. The three short modules will provide opportunities for participants to share their research and explore case studies from contemporary social science research in small groups, facilitated by experienced visual researchers.
