John Sinclair, The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Science & Technology has pleasure in inviting you to the Inaugural Professorial Lecture entitled

Butterflies and other animals:
40 years of adventure in ecology and conservation

The lecture will be delivered by Professor Tom Brereton, on Tuesday 16 May 2017 at 6 pm in The Grand Hall, Newton Building, St George’s Avenue, Northampton, NN2 6JD

Coffee & biscuits will be served on arrival at 5.30 pm. Following the lecture there will be an opportunity for networking and discussion over drinks & nibbles. For catering purposes, please advise Val Howe if you are able to attend.

PGR Student Poster Competition 2017: Invitation to all

PostergenericThe Graduate School would like to invite you to their Annual Research Student Poster Competition 2017 on Wednesday 17th May 2017, 11am to 2pm, in the Dialog Cafe, ground floor of Rockingham Library, Park Campus.

The poster competition is a development opportunity for doctoral research students, who present their research on an A1/A0 poster, giving short 1-1 verbal presentations alongside. So why not come along to meet some of our research students. They have been given a brief to present their research for a general, non-specialist audience, accessible to all. A warm welcome to our new PGR Intern, Leila Benseddik.

LeilaThe Graduate School are delighted to announce that we have recruited our new PGR Intern, Leila Benseddik – congratulations and welcome to Leila, who started working with us yesterday, Tuesday 25th April.

Leila is a PhD student in English and Creative Writing in the Faculty of Education and Humanities and she will be working with us 2.5 days a week for 9 months. Our part-time, paid internship post, administrated through Unitemps, will be a rolling internship, providing a current research student with skills transferable to a research career. Leila will be working here in Top Lodge, supporting The Graduate School’s many development activities and providing administrative support for workshops and events. Leila will develop skills in supporting researchers, whilst at the same time, as a PGR student herself, be able to offer valuable input into the programme. She will also be heavily involved in the organisation of this year’s Graduate School PGR Conference, which will be held on June 20th.

PGR Poster Competition 2017: Call for posters extended!

PostergenericThe call for posters for The Graduate School’s 12th Annual Poster Competition has been extended for another 5 days.  If you are a UoN research student and would like the chance to win a £100 or £75 prize then why not take part and submit your Entry Form to Simone by this Friday 28th April. Please also read the Rules of Entry 2017.

You have until the Poster Competition date to design and print your poster. The competition will be held on Wednesday 17th May 2017, 11am to 2pm, in the Dialog Cafe, ground floor of Rockingham Library, Park Campus. To enter the competition you will need to be available from 10am on the 17th May (to set up) and be present until 2pm. Seminar – The PhD journey: Exploring the supervision implications at key stages

Research degree students and supervisors are warmly invited to a research seminar on The PhD Journey, on Thursday 20th April at 10am in Sulgrave 029, Park Campus. The seminar will explore various anchor points across the research supervision process taking the student journey as the overarching framework. Themes of supervision pedagogy will explored as each milestone on the PhD journey is reached.

The seminar will be delivered by participants on the supervisor development programme: Mary Doveston; Rebecca Fakoussa; Steve O’Brien; Friedemann Schaber; Asieh Tabaghedi; Olinga Ta’eed.

Research Integrity and Ethics compulsory online courses for research students

Epigeum

All research students, who enrolled on a research degree from summer 2016, are required to take an online training course in Research Integrity before they reach the Transfer stage of their doctoral study. The course has been developed by the higher education courseware designer, Epigeum and is designed to provide students with a better understanding of the obligations and responsibilities needed by today’s researchers, along with practical advice on how to deal with the complex situations in which they may find themselves. The course takes roughly 300 minutes to complete, via Epigeum online, and students can dip in and out of it as they wish, juggling training around already busy schedules.  Read the rest of this entry

Seminar: Erasmus + Project on Entrepreneurial Education: Feedback on Staff Mobility Project with Almaty Management University in Kazakhstan

AlmatyOn 27th April participants in an Erasmus+ Project for staff mobility are running a seminar to report on their visits to Almaty Management University in Kazakhstan. Gill Gourlay, Sandy MacDonald, Kathleen Mortimer, Lydia Selby, Yan Wang, & Rebecca Fakoussa will discuss how the project works and their experience in working within the Erasmus framework. Additionally, issues around the development of entrepreneurial education in Kazakhstan and the UK will be explored.
