‘Experiencing the doctorate’: A new workshop run by Northampton PhD alumni
Three University of Northampton alumni, Dr Matthew Callender (human geography), Dr Richard Hazenberg (Business) and Dr Fiona Cosson (History), who all recently completed a PhD, will be running a unique, interactive workshop for doctoral research students. “Experiencing the doctorate – Exploring strategies and emotions” will present students with an opportunity to share and discuss some of the different emotions experienced during doctoral study and help them develop strategies to successfully complete their journey. Postgraduate Research Student Poster Competition 2014: Call for entries
The Graduate School are holding their 9th Annual Poster Competition on 7th May 2014 and are looking for keen research students to take part. So if you are a UN postgraduate student, registered on one of our research degree programmes, why not enter? It’s an excellent opportunity for you to illustrate and discuss your research. Analysing secondary data: new Graduate School workshop
A new quantitative methodology workshop for research students has been developed by a team from the School of Social Sciences and offered within the Graduate School Development Programme . “Analysing secondary data (quantitative): Going beyond the published results” has been designed by Catherine Fritz, Graham Smith, Chris Roe and Amar Cherchar. Swedish MA students join history workshop

On 10th and 11th March, a group of history research students from the University of Uppsala in Sweden visited the University to take part in a two-day workshop. The Swedish students are studying a two-year MA programme in Early-Modern History (taught in English), which has a strong research component.
The workshop was organised by Professor Jon Stobart and involved students on the University’s MA History programme, as well as history PhD students from Northampton and the University of Leicester. It provided an opportunity for detailed discussion of the historical sources and methods being employed by the British and Swedish students, and was organised around a number of themed panels which focused on topics from crime to consumption.
UCL English Graduate Conference: Transformations – Call for Papers
Over the past century the study of English literature has undergone vast transformations, prompting academics and writers to re-evaluate the concept of the ‘canon’, examine practices of reading, and consider the cultural impact of texts and criticism.
This year’s UCL English Department graduate conference seeks to explore the nature of transformation and the many possible meanings this can hold for the wide diaspora of text production and consumption.
All PGR students are invited to submit papers for consideration. Please submit abstracts (max. 250 words) for 15 minute papers to transformations.ucl@gmail.com by 1st April. For more information, visit http://ucl-transformations.tk/.
Reflections on Subject Futures Week…
It’s been over a month now since the excitement of Subject Future’s Week at the School of the Arts (27-31 January 2014), but much of the careers advice given by a whole host of individual’s from across the Creative Industries holds as true for postgraduates studying for a doctorate as it does for their peers in publishing, media, arts, theatre fashion and design.

University of Northampton Scholars affiliated to the CoHaB ITN team up with New Zealand Studies Network to Celebrate Fleur Adcock’s Eightieth Birthday
On 14th February 2014, Professor Janet Wilson, Director of Research at the University of Northampton School of the Arts, CoHaB representative and Deputy Chair of the New Zealand Studies Network (NZSN) celebrated with fellow authors and members of the NZSN, the eightieth birthday of internationally renowned New Zealand poet, Fleur Adcock.
