Conference report: University of Zaragoza ‘Acts of Remembrance’ conference

Dr Andermahr and Dr Allwork’s Santander Funded visit to the University of Zaragoza ‘Acts of Remembrance’ Conference (24-26 April 2013)

Larissa Allwork photoLast week, Dr Andermahr and Dr Allwork gave papers to the University of Zaragoza ‘Acts of Remembrance’ conference, organised by Constanza del Rio Alvaro and Maite Escudero Alias.  In a panel dedicated to ‘Agency, Trauma and Memory in British Women Writers’, on Wednesday 24th April, Dr Andermahr addressed the audience with her paper on trauma in Jeanette Winterson’s ‘Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?’  while fellow Winterson scholar Susana Onega  (University of Zaragoza) spoke on ‘Class, Trauma, Shame and Spectrality in Sarah Waters’ The Little Stranger.  Speaking to the conference on the same day in a panel on ‘Holocaust Memories’ with Christoph Houswitscka (Bamberg University, Germany) and Rudolf Freiberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany), Dr Allwork talked about trauma and researching and writing the histories and memories of the Holocaust.  Both Andermahr and Allwork’s papers were well received, reinforcing our academic partnership with the University of Zaragoza’s Research Group in Contemporary Narratives in English and raising the international profile of the University of Northampton.

Enhancing the Impact of Publishing : Emerald Author Workshop

Emerald Author Workshop: Tuesday 30th April 2013

The author workshop held at Emerald publishers head office in West Yorkshire brought together the editors of journals and the authors of papers in an insightful and rewarding dialogue. This full day workshop enabled Emerald to better understand the challenges and demands of authors in offering a high quality integrated service. With 2 papers a minute a being published and snail-mail giving way to electronic formats the issue of maintaining quality and time taken to publication were the hot topics.

Come along to the 8th May Annual Research Student Poster Competition

UN Research Students, Supervisors and staff are invited to join us at the Graduate School’s Research Student Poster competition, which takes place on Wednesday 8th May, from 11:15 to 2pm in the Dialog Cafe area of the Rockingham Library, Park Campus. Please drop in, if you can, take a look at the posters and support your colleagues.

The event will be opened by Professor Ian Livingstone, Head of the Graduate School, at 11:15 and will close at 13:50 with the announcement of winners by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Petford. The winner will receive a £100 prize, with two runner-up prizes of £75.

The aim of this event is for students to create a visually exciting poster which explains their research to a mixed audience of non subject specialists. The poster competition is open to all research students from all years of study.

School of the Arts poet to be involved in major choral performance at Worcester Cathedral

Worcester CathedralAs part of the Worcester International Festival for Young Singers Gala Concert, the World Premier of Five Days that Changed the World, the latest collaboration between composer and choral conductor, Bob Chilcott and Charles Bennett,  Reader in Poetry and senior lecturer at the University of Northampton, will be performed by over 400 young singers on 26 July 2013.  Building on Charles and Bob’s previous successful collaborations, most notably the BBC Prom  Angry Planet, Five days that Changed the World looks set to be a great achievement as well as an enjoyable evening out.

Grounded Theory Forum

In the first meeting of the Grounded Theory Forum, held on April 24th, we discussed the way forward for the forum and generated some exciting ideas, including a GT blog, conference and journal. A wide ranging discussion took place on the different versions of GT and we plan to take this forward to the next meeting, on June 26th, when the second half will be given over to discussing Heath and Cowley’s 2004 paper debating the differences between Glaser and Strauss (reference below). Graduate School Postgraduate Researcher Conference

The University of Northampton Graduate School are holding their annual Postgraduate Researcher Conference on June 27th 2013 and would like to invite staff, research students and supervisors to join them. The conference provides an ideal development opportunity for new researchers to present their research, discuss and share good practice with others in a non-threatening environment.  The conference will showcase the diverse range of research activity within the University and will provide an excellent opportunity for research students to practice their presentation skills.

Any UN postgraduate research students and early career researchers who wish to present their research should email a title and an abstract (ca. 150 words), outlining their research and its context, to Simone Apel by Monday June 3rd. Researching Learning, Learning to Research

The University of Northampton’s School of Education are holding their Annual Research Student Conference on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th May 2013. Entitled “Researching Learning, Learning to Research”, the conference gives UN Research Students an opportunity to present their research to a wider audience. The two-day conference will featuring keynote presentations, research student papers and posters. The conference will be held in the Sunley Conference Centre from 9.00am – 4.30pm. All welcome. Transforming Postgraduate Research: Engaging with the Digital World is a one-day interactive training initiative for postgraduate students in the arts and humanities interested in public engagement and digital media. The day will comprise keynote lectures and practical workshops with experts in this field providing insights into using the digital. Students attending this event will explore the value of digital engagement and how digital platforms can be used to enhance their academic profile and produce creative outputs.

Topics that will be covered include: social medias and academia, blogs and academic websites, creative technologies and impact, and showcasing and developing educational resources. In addition to our two keynote talks, the event will also include a student-led Q&A and discussion session between participants and our panel of experts.
