PhD Transfer Seminar: ‘Sustainability in the Leather Industry’ Oluwaseyi Olomoso

Everyone is welcome to this PhD Transfer Seminar on ‘Sustainability in the Leather Industry.’

Abstract The implementation of sustainable practices has become an increasingly important topic for industries and more specifically, the supply chains within them. This study focuses on sustainability implementation in a traditional leather industry, with a complex supply chain that has focused on the environment sustainability, even with the existence of measurement and audit tools. But can an industry be truly sustainable by focusing on one sustainability aspect, out of three? How do we effectively implement the other two aspects? After implementation of the other two aspects, how can we effectively measure and track the impacts? The aim of this research is to address these issues by exploring the views of major stakeholders in the leather supply chain. Workshops offered for Postgraduate Researchers include Preparing for Transfer and For the Viva, the latter running twice a year in October and next May as part of a Finishing Development Day along with Editing and Finishing Your Thesis and Proofreading your Work. Getting Started 1 and 2 are for research students just starting out and include workshops such as Setting out, Writing and Structuring your Thesis, Systematic Literature Searching and Risk Assessing your Research. We also have Development Days on Getting Published and Effective Progress, the latter for students mid-way through their doctoral studies. Lynda online learning… for researchers?

Lynda features over 5,000 on-demand training courses on a variety of different business, technical and creative topics.  Lynda is particularly useful when it comes to learning software so you will find courses on Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word, and other software such as Nvivo, SPSS and R Programming. In addition to this you can also find courses on typical transferable skills – successful presentations, communication skills, time and project management, critical thinking and building resilience, all subjects relevant to you as researchers. MOOC – Open Science – Free

The TU Delft Library together with the TU Delft Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, has launched its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on the topic of Open Science https://www.edx.org/course/open-science-sharing-your-research-with-the-world

This MOOC covers an introduction to Open Science and the FAIR principles, open research data, open access to data and publications and how to increase research(er) visibility. It might be of interest to you or colleagues.

It starts on October 30, takes 4 weeks (about 4 hours per week) and you can register through the link below.

Invitation to the UoN Research Conference: 20th and 21st June 2018

New Strategy JPegThe Graduate School and the Faculties would like to invite you to the first jointly run UoN Research Conference, which will be held from 20th to 21st June 2018.

We have almost 50 oral presentations from postgraduate researchers and staff from across the University over the two days, displaying about 30 research posters and are also holding our second 3-Minute Thesis competition. The four faculties and The Graduate School have got together to plan this 2-day conference, which crosses faculties and disciplines. Please see the conference website for the schedule, and to register your place at the conference on your preferred day (or why not come to both!). Poster Competition winners!

The Graduate School’s 13th Annual Poster Competition for Postgraduate Researchers was held on Wednesday 22nd May in Rockingham Library, Park Campus.  The event offered the students the opportunity to present their research in the form of a poster, practice their presentation skills to a non-specialist audience and a chance to win a prize of £100 or £75.

17 research students from different Faculties presented their posters, which were assessed by seven judges, a mix of University staff, academic and support staff. One first prize of £100 and three runners up prizes of £75 were chosen.

The winners were Charlotte Brooks from the Faculty of Health and Society who won the £100 first prize. The three other prizes of £75 were awarded to Amanda Ash from the Faculty of Health and Society, Frances Hudson and Shalini Bisani from the Faculty of Business and Law. Congratulations to all our winners.
