Inaugural John Clare Memorial Lecture with Professor Nick Groom a Success!
On Friday 12th December, the English Division at the University of Northampton School of the Arts was very pleased to welcome Professor Nick Groom (University of Exeter) to give the Inaugural John Clare Memorial Lecture. Accompanied by mulled wine and mince pies, the event was a real opportunity for the School to celebrate the legacy of John Clare and open its doors to members of the John Clare Trust, the John Clare Society and Sue Shields and Kathryn Parsons, artists who have been involved in the exhibition, ‘UnEarthed: John Clare’.
Prizes and Grants for Professor Janet Wilson and Dr Gerri Kimber’s Literary Research on New Zealand
This Autumn, scholars in the English Division, Professor Janet Wilson and Dr Gerri Kimber have received prestigious awards for their research on the literature and culture of New Zealand.
Call for Papers: The Psychology of Emotion – A new student conference
Four doctoral students from the School of Psychology have been awarded funding from the UN Innovation Fund to run a student conference entitled Exploring the Nature of Emotion and Feeling; Critical Issues and Future Directions in Emotion and Feeling Based Research.
The conference will be held on April 8th 2015. Aiming to provide a friendly and welcoming environment where students can explore the nature of emotion and feeling, it aims to critically consider how this shapes our understanding of emotion today. Key themes in emotion and feeling based literature will be examined, providing students will the opportunity to consider future directions of research in this area.
A call for papers and posters has been announced for doctoral students to participate, with the first call for papers deadline 30th November. Final date for submissions February 15th 2015.

New research students: getting started
FAQ: I am a new research student and the next induction week is some time away. What do I need to know now?
First of all – welcome to the University of Northampton! There are plenty of people here to help you get started with your research – your supervisor of course, but also a number of people in the Graduate School and the Library. If you have any questions, please don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Your top priority will be to make sure that you can access the university computer network and the various services that it offers. The checklist for new research students elsewhere on the Research Support Hub (this blog) describes what you need to do to achieve this.
Now that you have all the right login details you should be able to find all the key information you need about being a research student at Northampton.
SOTA Announces Autumn Research Seminar Programme 2014
Tomorrow, the School of the Arts Research Seminar Programme for the Autumn term will start with a lecture by University of Buckingham Dickens scholar, Professor John Drew. We have a great line-up this term with established SOTA researchers, visiting scholars, and new members of staff to SOTA. All Seminars will be held in Room MY120 at 2.15pm unless otherwise stated. There will be free tea, coffee and biscuits. All staff and postgraduate students are welcome to attend.
