The Academy 2017: From Universal Man to Identity Politics: The Rise and Fall of The Self

This year’s Academy will take place on Saturday 15 & Sunday 16 July 2017, Wyboston Lakes Executive Centre, Bedfordshire and it will look at the rise and fall of the self. The first day will cover the historic formation of the self, its role as a motor to historical development, and its classical formulation in political theory, economics, philosophy and law. The Battle of Ideas is a weekend of high-level, thought provoking public debate, organised annually by The Institute of Ideas. This year it takes place on 22nd and 23rd October at the Barbican in London.

This, the 12th Battle of Ideas festival, provides a forum for free thinking, debate and discussion, featuring over 80 sessions and hundreds of insightful and thought provoking speakers from across the globe, representing a wide range of disciplines and viewpoints.

Join in the Battle of Ideas

battle_of_ideas_2014The Battle of Ideas is a weekend of high-level, thought provoking public debate, organised annually by The Institute of Ideas. This year it takes place on 17th and 18th October at the Barbican in London and also features a range of satellite events across Europe.

This year’s programme at the Barbican includes important keynote debates, such as:

  • Is there a future for liberalism?
  • Is technology limiting our humanity?
  • Religious tolerance: can we keep the faith?
  • From literature to Twitter: The death of the reader?
  • The Corbyn Effect: are the old parties dead?

Academy scholarship competition for full time research students

academy_public_sphereThe Institute of Ideas Academy is back – a residential weekend retreat which is unashamedly intellectual. From Friday 17th July to Monday 20th July, in the countryside of Bedfordshire, you get the chance to discuss The Public Throughout History, from the Greek and Roman Republics to the more complex, mobile, global publics of the present day.

For the fourth year, The Institute of Ideas will be running the Academy Scholarship Programme for full time students of ANY academic discipline. Successful applicants will be eligible to attend the annual Academy weekend for the heavily subsidised rate of £60, including accommodation and full board. Read on for details of how to apply. Battle of Ideas Festival on 18-19 October 2014

battle_of_ideas_2014The Battle of Ideas festival, organised by The Institute of Ideas, provides a forum for free thinking, debate and discussion on a host of topics. It will take place on the weekend of 18 and 19 October at the Barbican in London, one of the world’s leading art centres.

This year’s programme includes important keynote debates such as:

  • Should we fear democracy?;
  • Why are we afraid to judge?;
  • Hashtag feminism: radical or banal?;
  • Big Data: big danger? and
  • After Gaza: the return of anti-Semitism?

Academy Scholarship Competition 2014

athens2The Institute of Ideas Academy Scholarship Programme offers a small number of full time students (any academic discipline) attendance tickets for the three-day annual Academy weekend for only £60, which includes three nights accommodation, full board & an events programme! The Institute of Ideas Academy is a residential retreat running from Friday 18 July to Monday 21 July, in which you can be unashamedly esoteric and intellectual for a weekend.
