Postgraduate Research Student Network: Christmas get-together
Are you a postgraduate research student? If so, hop along to our inaugural postgraduate networking Christmas party, which will be held at Top Lodge, the home of the Graduate School on Park Campus, on 16th December 2015 from 4-6pm.
In an attempt to establish some PGR socials and networking events, we are having this small Christmas social to get things started. So get your Christmas hats and jumpers on and come along for a PGR catch-up, sing along to Christmas songs, and enjoy a selection of food and mince pies. All PGRs welcome!
Please book so we know how many to cater for. Look forward to seeing you there.

The afternoon will involve talks from our current postgraduate research students speaking on developments within their research. The event will start with a buffet lunch at 12.15pm and talks will begin at 1.15pm (see attached Poster for schedule and further information). The symposium is being held at our Pitsford Site, NN3 7QL (gate 4 of the main campus).

Careers sessions for researchers: self-employment
The Graduate School are offering a couple of brand new workshops on self-employment for researchers and the first is coming up next Tuesday 1st December.
Dr Hiten Vyas, Business Adviser at the Enterprise Club will be running Self-Employment: Is it for you? in the TPod, Rockingham Library from 12-2pm, with lunch after. Discipline-related research skills from the School of Health: open to all
The School of Health have recently launched their discipline-related development programme, which includes a range of workshops and seminars on a variety of themes, open to all PGRs at the University of Northampton. This development programme has been designed to support researchers – and those supporting research – in subjects which relate, broadly, to Health and Social Care. The sessions detailed are available to research students (PhD and Professional Doctorate) within the School of Health and from across the University. Staff from the School and further afield are also welcome. Workshops coming up include public involvement, academic writing and research impact. Read the rest of this entry
Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) Winter School; Call for papers from postgraduate students
The Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) Winter School, which will be taking place on 13/14th January 2016 at Park Campus, University of Gloucestershire, Cheltenham, has invited papers from postgraduate students.
The CCRI Winter School provides a friendly and supportive environment for postgraduates, across geography, rural studies and environmental management themes, to present their doctoral work and receive feedback from CCRI staff and PGR students. More information about the CCRI and past Winter School events can be found on their website.
Any postgraduate student interested in participating should send a paper title and short abstract of around 200 words to maffleck@glos.ac.uk by 30th November 2015.
Hugh Kearns returns with good feedback! A workshop for supervisors.
On March 11th 2016 we are welcoming back researcher & educator, Hugh Kearns. Hugh is recognised internationally and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and, now for the third time, Northampton.
Hugh is running two workshops, one for supervisors on Giving Good Feedback, focusing on giving positive feedback, providing criticism without crushing the recipient, varying the type of feedback depending on the student’s stage, what to do when your student doesn’t listen… and more. A warm welcome to all of our new PGRs from everyone at the Research Support Hub!
Two thirds of the 38 new students, at the end of October’s four-day Induction
From 27th to 30th October 2015, The Graduate School welcomed 38 new postgraduate research students, all joining the University to start a research degree, some part-time, some full time, some off-site, many from overseas. 38 is the highest figure for a single induction here at Northampton.
Over the four days they were launched into their doctorate by an intensive series of workshops, including an introduction to the procedures and processes of doctoral study, support sessions where they met many members of University staff, IT sessions where they learnt some new research skills and a presentation session where they all gave a 5 minute talk on their research. Congratulations to all of the 38 PGRs and welcome to the University of Northampton. You can read more here.
English language workshops coming up.
If you are a research student for whom English is not your first language, you may be interested in some workshops which are taking place on 11th, 18th and 25th November. Helping to improve your language skills, the workshops are open to PGRs from all Schools. More details can be found in the flier below. Contact Susie Cowley-Haselden for more information. Deadline extended for Images of Research 2015-16 – there is still time to enter!
Images from the 2014-15 competition
If you haven’t yet had time to take a photo or draw a picture reflecting your research there is still time. The deadline for the Graduate School’s Images of Research competition has been extended to a final deadline of 5pm on 24th November 2015. Just grab your camera or pencil/paintbrush and produce a unique image which captures the essence of your research, or an element of your research, in a visual, artistic or photographic way. Add a snappy title and 150 word summary and that is all you need to do to participate.
IoR will, again, be a competition, where viewers can vote for their top three favourites. Entries for IoR 2015-16 must be emailed to Simone by November 24th 2015. Read on for the rules…
Workshop on public involvement in health and social care

A workshop on effective public involvement, organised by the School of Health, is to be opened out to all research students and early career researchers. The session is running on Wednesday December 2nd from 2-4 in PY101 and aims to provide an introduction to the principles, concepts and methods for effective public involvement (PI), participation and engagement. The workshop is to be facilitated by Paula Wray, Public Involvement Programme Lead for the National Institute of Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care East Midlands (NIHR CLAHRC EM).
