Research related committees – When are they and who are they?
Welcome to the 2015-16 cycle of committees (research degrees board, research degrees committee, research ethics committee)!
The committee dates and deadlines are now available in the supervisor toolkit and student toolkit.
It is also important that you know who the members of the committees are and what their roles are. You can find a listing below. Postgraduate Research students are reminded that RDB members are available for pastoral support (please see the PGR Code of Practice in the Student Toolkit for more information)

Call for papers – Texts and contexts: the cultural legacies of Ada Lovelace
The mathematician, Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), daughter of poet Lord Byron, is celebrated as a pioneer of computer science. As part of the University of Oxford’s celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of Lovelace’s birth, a one-day workshop on Tuesday 8th December will bring together research students and early career researchers to discuss the varied cultural legacies associated with Ada Lovelace.
Researchers from all disciplines are invited to submit proposals for papers on the influences of Lovelace’s work, on topics including, but not limited to, literature, history, mathematics, music, visual art, and computer science. Proposals, not exceeding 250 words, for 15-minute papers should be submitted to adalovelaceworkshop@ell.ox.ac.uk by 5pm, Friday 28 August 2015. Those who are accepted to speak at this graduate workshop will also be offered free registration for the Ada Lovelace 200 Symposium taking place on the following two days. Finding sources of funding for your postgraduate degree study.
Are you a postgraduate student (PhD, Professional Doctorate, Mphil or Masters student) at the University of Northampton who is self-funded? Lucy Atkinson’s new workshop “Finding Alternative Sources of Funding” ran on Wednesday 24 June – Lucy has been very successful in obtaining funding for her self-funded PhD and in the workshop she shared her ideas for gaining funding from a variety of sources but, particularly, a major, but neglected, alternative funding source in the area of charities and external bodies. Conference report: Graduate School Annual Conference attracts a record number of guests
The 2015 annual research student and early career researcher conference, run by the University of Northampton Graduate School and held last Wednesday 17th June, attracted almost 100 research staff and students through the door.
A broad array of high-impact research topics were presented, from research on socially responsible businesses to the issues surrounding withdrawing treatment from neonates. A representative from every School presented their research, students in their first and final year, full and part time students, plus papers from an early career researcher working at the University. The theme of the day was Research Integration, and papers fell under the four broad themes of Teaching and Learning, Science Impact, Social Responsibility and Language. Read the rest of this entry

Finding Alternative Sources of Funding: Workshop for PGRs
Are you a postgraduate researcher at the University who is self-funded? If so, you might be interested in coming along to Lucy Atkinson’s new workshop, on Wednesday, 24 June 2015 from 16:00 to 18:00 in C311, Cottesbrooke, Park Campus. Lucy will show you possible routes to finding alternative sources of funding, whether for fees, maintenance, research expenses, conferences or travel.
Lucy has been very successful in obtaining funding for her self-funded PhD and she would like to share the idea, requirements, documents and enthusiasm with you to try to help alleviate some financial pressure during your postgraduate studies. Dr Mike Daniel Research Degree Scholarship – £500
The deadline for applications for the Mike Daniel Research Degree Scholarship is the 15th May 2015. Find out how you can apply.
Dr Mike Daniel was Pro Rector (Academic Quality) from 1993-2002 and played a major role in guiding the institution towards taught degree awarding powers and university college designation. At his untimely death in 2002 he was preparing the case for full university designation, friends and colleagues raised sufficient funds to create a research degree scholarship to be named after him.

Sharing Stories Programme Evaluation
Principal Investigator: Alison Ward
The Sharing Stories Programme is delivered by storyteller Miranda Quinney at Peace Hospice Care in Watford. Through a series of workshops, Miranda works with people in palliative care to tell their life stories, which are then recorded as a legacy to leave their families. During her work Miranda has noticed significant benefit to the participants of the workshops and their families. This evaluation will begin the process of evidencing the impact on participants, which will be used to inform the roll out of storytelling across other Hospices. Read the rest of this entry
