Transforming Postgraduate Research: Engaging with the Digital World

Transforming Postgraduate Research: Engaging with the Digital World is a one-day interactive training initiative for postgraduate students in the arts and humanities interested in public engagement and digital media. The day will comprise keynote lectures and practical workshops with experts in this field providing insights into using the digital. Students attending this event will explore the value of digital engagement and how digital platforms can be used to enhance their academic profile and produce creative outputs.

Topics that will be covered include: social medias and academia, blogs and academic websites, creative technologies and impact, and showcasing and developing educational resources. In addition to our two keynote talks, the event will also include a student-led Q&A and discussion session between participants and our panel of experts.

Workshop report: Research data management for librarians

Yesterday’s event for Library and Learning Services staff was the third in the series of research data management (RDM) workshops being run by Digital Curation Centre (DCC) staff for the University of Northampton.  Our ‘institutional engagement’ with the DCC is part of a sector-wide initiative to enhance the skills of researchers, and those who support them, in RDM.

As a basic introduction, the session started by clarifying what research data are, then covered data management planning, data sharing and the skills required to support these tasks.  It concluded with a round-up of progress in RDM activity at Northampton.

Interestingly, some of the most energetic debate focused on the challenges of sharing data.

Improve your research skills with a little help from CfAP

CfAP logoChoosing the right tool to analyse your data or finding the best way to structure your findings can be a fraught process.  However help is on hand from the Centre for Achievement and Performance – otherwise known as CfAP.

CfAP exists to help all students, including those doing research degrees, achieve their academic potential:

“If you were training for the Olympics you may need to work on aspects of weight, speed or flexibility to improve your performance and to gain insights into how your body works. Visiting CfAP should be regarded in a similar way – you wish to work on aspects of your academic work to improve your performance and to gain a better understanding of how you learn. Engaging with the digital world: An event for arts and humanities research students

C21imageThe University of Oxford and the Arts and Humanities Research Council have collaborated to offer a one-day interactive training session for postgraduate students across the arts and humanities, focusing on public engagement and digital media. “Transforming Postgraduate Research: Engaging with the Digital World” will be held on Monday 17 June at the University of Oxford, and aims to provide introductory training in using digital media to disseminate academic research. Participants will explore the value of digital engagement and learn how a range of digital platforms can be used to enhance academic profile. The event features practical workshop sessions, keynote lectures, student-led Q&A and discussion sessions between participants and a panel of experts. Topics covered include:

  • Social media(s) and academia
  • Blogs and academic websites
  • Creative technologies and impact
  • Showcasing and developing educational resources

“Writing your CV” workshop for UN Research Students

graduate-school-workshops940The Graduate School, together with the UN Careers Service, are offering a workshop session for Research Students to improve and perfect their CVs.

This two hour session, with lunch, will focus on writing and refining CVs (chronological, skills & academic) and covering letters. In the second hour there will be a chance for 1-1 advice on the researcher’s own CV.

Saturday School on April 13th

graduate-school-workshops940The Graduate School will be running a Saturday school for UN PGR students on April 13th 10-5pm in the T-Pod, Rockingham Library, Park Campus.

We will be covering “Preparing for Transfer” in the morning, followed by brand new workshops on “Interviewing for Researchers”, and “Negotiation skills”. The afternoon workshop on Negotiation Skills will be run by external trainer Karin Blak and you will learn a range of skills vital for managing situations in collaborative relationships, such as with your supervisor or other work and study colleagues. Workshop for lecturers on Aspire reading lists

If you are engaged in teaching students at UoN and giving students reading lists, these workshops may be of interest to you. Further dates will be added and published here.

Library and Learning Services is offering workshops at Avenue on the Aspire Reading List Software on Feb 26th and March 4th (see below for details and times). Aspire is a piece of software that enables you to create an online reading list with direct links through to full text articles, websites, e-books and items on the library catalogue. You can also link to Aspire from within NILE. To sign up, please email the session leader running the workshop.

Aspire workshops will last an hour and you will be shown how Aspire works as well as being able to have a go at creating your own Aspire reading list. If you have a real reading list you’d like to put online, bring it along and we can work on it during the workshop. There will also be an extra half an hour at the end of the session, with a member of the LLS Academic Liaison Team on hand to help, for anyone who wants to stay and work on their reading list.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available.
