Finishing Development Day for research students on 23rd February
Are you a research student in the final stages of your doctorate, post-Transfer? If you are, you may be interested in the Graduate School Finishing Development Day, running on Tuesday 23rd February.
The 3 sessions will be:
9:30: Preparing for the viva: Prof Chris Roe.
Followed by Meet the ‘viva survivors’! PhD alumni talk about their experiences for a frank and informative question and answer session.
13:00 Editing and finishing your thesis: Prof. Ian Livingstone.
15:15 Proofreading your work: Prof Ian Livingstone and Simone Apel.

Workshop for research students approaching Transfer of Registration
The Graduate School are running a Development Day on Thursday 14th January for research students approaching or preparing for their Transfer of Registration. Our Pre-Transfer Development Day includes 3 workshops: Preparing for Transfer, Create your own data management plan, and Communicating your Research: Preparing for the Transfer viva and seminar.

Discipline-related research skills from the School of Social Sciences
The School of Social Sciences offers a programme of multidisciplinary training workshops. Subject-specific training and support is also offered via a diverse range of specialist research groups. Their programme is open to all PGRs at the University of Northampton.

Discipline-related research skills from the School of Health: open to all
The School of Health have recently launched their discipline-related development programme, which includes a range of workshops and seminars on a variety of themes, open to all PGRs at the University of Northampton. This development programme has been designed to support researchers – and those supporting research – in subjects which relate, broadly, to Health and Social Care. The sessions detailed are available to research students (PhD and Professional Doctorate) within the School of Health and from across the University. Workshop on public involvement in health and social care

A workshop on effective public involvement, organised by the School of Health, is to be opened out to all research students and early career researchers. The session is running on Wednesday December 2nd from 2-4 in PY101 and aims to provide an introduction to the principles, concepts and methods for effective public involvement (PI), participation and engagement. The workshop is to be facilitated by Paula Wray, Public Involvement Programme Lead for the National Institute of Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care East Midlands (NIHR CLAHRC EM). Where do you go when you want to learn a new skill or improve your competency? Sign up to a practical, hands-on workshop? Or look online?
Whilst there is no substitute for attending a good skills development workshop, face-to-face learning is not always possible for a whole host of reasons – accessibility, time, family commitments. We all know how good YouTube is for learning ‘ordinary stuff’ but, increasingly, postgraduate students can find some valuable skills development resources online, such as via MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Are you doing your research degree on a part-time basis?…
…. then there are two day-long workshops coming up, free of charge to research students in the Midlands. All you have to do is to book your own travel!
The first, at The University of Birmingham on 9th June, is Part-Time Researcher, for students in the early stages of their research and will focus on the ethos and process of part-time research; Working with your Supervisor, Time Management and Making Progress, Forward Planning and Objective Setting.
If you are in the final 18 months of your PhD or doctorate, the Part Time Researcher Finishing Workshop on 22 June at the Open University in Milton Keynes is for you. This includes sections on Editing, Preparing for the Viva, and Publishing.

Researcher Links Workshop on Eco Food Supply Chains: Exploring Industrial Ecosystems to Minimize Food Waste and Maximize Social Benefits
The Business School is now inviting researchers from the UK and Brazil to apply to attend this workshop which will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from 24th to 26th August 2015. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Researcher Links programme. The application form, with more details on the initiative, is available for downloading from http://www.northampton.ac.uk/research/business-and-management-studies (scroll to the bottom of the page).
The deadline for application form submissions in both countries is 15th June 2015 and candidates will be notified about the submission result by 30th June 2015.
