School of the Arts Postgraduate Conference, 18th-19th September 2014
We are delighted to announce that the annual School of the Arts Postgraduate Conference will be held on the 18th-19th September 2014. MA and PhD students from the School of the Arts are strongly encouraged to submit papers on their research projects to Larissa.Allwork@northampton.ac.uk by 31 July 2014.
“Research Diversity” takes to the stage.
On Thursday 26th June, The Graduate School held their 2014 PGR Conference, where Postgraduate Research Students and Early Career Researchers had an opportunity to practice and hone their presentation skills in front of an audience comprised of the University of Northampton research community; staff and students.

Research Diversity was a perfectly fitting title! After an introduction by Professor Jon Stobart, research student Emma Clarke (pictured) kicked off the day with a very amusing presentation on how it feels being at the start of her ‘journey’, asking “Am I a proper researcher?” She was followed, throughout the morning, by papers on pollinators, a World Bank case study, cyborgs, families and British drug treatment. PGR Annual Conference 2014: Abstract deadline June 4th!
The University of Northampton Graduate School are holding their 2014 Postgraduate Researcher Conference on June 26th and the deadline for abstracts is Weds June 4th. Any UN postgraduate research student and early career researcher who would like to present their research should email a title and an abstract (ca. 150 words), outlining their research and its context, to Simone Apel. Researcher’s presentations should be 10 minutes long, with 5 minutes allocated for questions. We expect to have about 16 sessions running throughout the day, with lunch. Read the rest of this entry

Call for papers: Travel and the country house: places, cultures and practices

Travel has long played a vital role in shaping the country house, opening up horizons and exposing both house and owner to a variety of external influences. Travel impacted upon values, tastes, material culture and money, and helped to articulate the flow of ideas, information, goods and capital. The importance of the Grand Tour and Empire to the country house has long been recognised, but domestic tourism and travel for more mundane purposes – to visit family or friends, engage in political life or go to town – were also significant. In this conference, we wish to explore a wide range of travel experiences and consider how these impacted on the country house.
