Using Eventbrite for booking Graduate School workshops and events.

Graduate School WorkshopsGraduate School workshops and events, for research students and early-career researchers, are administered through a booking system called Eventbrite. So I thought it time for a post outlining the booking process. Each individual event or workshop has its own booking code, a Web link, which looks something like this – http://gsannconf2014.eventbrite.co.uk/. You can find an up-to-date list of all our workshops and events, and their codes, at the Research Hub post here. Read on to learn about the easy-peasy booking process, cancelling and keeping up to date. Read the rest of this entry

Getty Images: the wider picture

You may have seen news reports over the last week – such as this one from the BBC – on Getty Images making a substantial chunk of its vast image library free-to-use on blogs and social media.

At first glance, this seems like great news for bloggers looking for quality images to accompany their posts. But as with most free lunches, you might want to read the fine print before you grab your knife and fork.

Checklist for new research students

FAQ: I’ve just started as a research student at the University of Northampton.  How do I get access to university IT systems and library resources?

As a new research student it is important that you are quickly able to take advantage of the many resources and services available to you at the university.  This checklist will show you how to log in to the different services and tell you where to get help should you have any problems.

(Note: The checklist contains a lot of information and is therefore quite long, but if a quick overview is all you need then check out the summary table toward the end.)

Making a superstar researcher

Professor Jeff Ollerton has drawn my attention to an interesting post on what it takes to be a productive researcher.

In his post on Jeremy Fox’s blog, Brian McGill lists William Shockley‘s eight hurdles which must be cleared if a researcher is to be successful and productiveRed foxes.  It is not just about writing: being able to come up with a worthwhile research idea, knowing when to stop researching and start writing, and being willing to make changes in response to peer feedback are three of the eight steps.  If your performance exceeds the average on each of these steps you could be well on the way to becoming a superstar researcher.

Is it time for some new year’s research resolutions?

Sometimes I set myself a new year’s resolution, sometimes I don’t.  This makes me fairly typical, according to Statistic Brain‘s summary of new year’s resolution statistics.  I’m also typical in that the resolutions I make usually relate to leading a more healthy lifestyle and, unfortunately, in that sooner or later I’ll fail to stick to them (a life devoid of chocolate is just too much to ask).
