Project Management in Science and Technology Workshop on September 19th 2017
We are pleased to announce that thyssenkrupp , a leading international company with their manufacturing, service and research and innovation centres (RIC) located in Brazil, China, Spain, South Korea, UAE, UK, and USA, in cooperation with the Graduate School, is organizing a workshop on Project Management in Science and Technology. The workshop falls within the framework of Partnership for Research and Innovation between the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology and thyssenkrupp Elevator AG (tkE) and will take place on Tuesday 19th September 2017 from 10am to 5pm in Grand Hall, Newton building, avenue campus. Facilitated by experienced senior management staff from (tkE), the workshop aims to develop an understanding of efficient adaptive Project Management (PM) methods. This event is open to PGR students, specifically in science/technology, engineering/product design and manufacturing. Nominations for the Times Higher Education Outstanding Research Supervisor of the Year 2017 are NOW OPEN!
Nominations for the outstanding research supervisor of the year award are now open. Sponsored by the Times Higher Education, this award will be given to the individual who has created the most supportive, stimulating and inspirational research environment for doctoral students. Entries will be accepted from institutions, supervisors themselves or their students or colleagues, but in all cases the institution must support the submission and student testimonies must be included in the supplementary documentation. The Graduate School’s Postgraduate Research Conference rescheduled to September 14th.
The Graduate School Research Conference 2016
The University of Northampton Graduate School’s 2017 annual Postgraduate Researcher Conference for PGR students and early career researchers will now be held on Thursday September 14th 2017.
Originally scheduled for 20th June, the reschedule to September enables an important addition to the programme – the Graduate School’s first 3MT competition. Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) was originally developed by The University of Queensland in Australia and celebrates the exciting research conducted by PhD students around the world. The competition helps to cultivate students’ presentation and research communication skills. Presenting in a 3MT competition increases student’s capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. NVivo intermediate level workshop: with a beginner’s online training course
On 10 Jul 2017, from 13:00 to 16:00, the Graduate School is running a workshop on using Nvivo for intermediate level. Attendees are expected to have access to NVivo and have basic NVivo knowledge (adding data sources, creating node trees and coding). Nevertheless, there is still an opportunity for students without prior knowledge of NVivo to attend the workshop. Lynda, an online training package, offers the basics of Nvivo in an easy and simple way through an online course. This can be found here but make sure you read the getting started with Linda below for instructions.

Qualitative Research Methods Workshop: An Interactive Guide
On the 4th of July 2017, the Graduate School will be running a one day workshop on qualitative research methods. In this workshop Dr. Neil Raven will introduce participants to a range of qualitative research methods that can be used separately or as part of a mixed methods approach. The day will begin by considering the use of interviews in academic research, before exploring the potential of focus groups. During the afternoon attention will turn to the use of observation and photography as methods that have the capacity to generate a wealth of rich qualitative data. Read the rest of this entry

How to book Graduate School workshops and events on Gateway
All workshops and events organised by the Graduate School are now available to view and book via Gateway, our online postgraduate research management system.
- Go to Gateway.
- Log in, choose the link ‘Calendar’ from the left hand menu.
- Click on the title of the workshop you’re interested in – all workshops/events are in date order.
- Click on the Green dot ‘Respond’.
- Choose ‘Attending’ then submit. You have the option to write a note, for instance if you know you’re going to be late arriving at the workshop.
- If you subsequently need to cancel your place just repeat the process and change the response to ‘Not Attending’.
- If you are interested in the workshop but cannot attend the date scheduled then choose Defer. This will let me know that you are interested in attending another time. We may be able to schedule the workshop again.
- To check which workshops you have booked onto and generate a list of attendances, read on.
