Checklist for new research students
FAQ: I’ve just started as a research student at the University of Northampton. How do I get access to university IT systems and library resources?
As a new research student it is important that you are quickly able to take advantage of the many resources and services available to you at the university. This checklist will show you how to log in to the different services and tell you where to get help should you have any problems.
(Note: The checklist contains a lot of information and is therefore quite long, but if a quick overview is all you need then check out the summary table toward the end.)
Graduate School workshops in February
We have a variety of Graduate School workshops coming up in February for research degree students.
We have 4 places left for Hugh Kearn’s Research Student workshop “Seven secrets” which will be held at Sunley Conference Centre next Tuesday 11th. Hugh Kearns is recognised internationally as a public speaker, educator and researcher and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard and Stanford. Research students, please don’t miss this great opportunity.

Workshop: Social Media for Researchers on 14th January

How can your research have impact? Workshop!
“How can your research have impact?” will be held on Wednesday, 8 January 2014 from 11:00 to 13:00 in C109, Cottesbrooke, Park Campus. A free lunch is included!
Katie Jones will examine research ‘impact’ in the context of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) and will use impact case studies in order to formulate discussion around the topic.
The workshop is for researchers at the University of Northampton who have just completed, or are currently studying for, a doctorate, or for research staff in the early stages of their career.

The Graduate School are holding a development day for research students next month with experienced trainer & researcher, Dr Adair Richards.

Workshop on ‘managing your research data’ this Thursday!
Do you need advice & guidance on managing your research data? If so, book your place on the Graduate School’s next workshop on Thursday 7th November 10:30-2pm, in the T-Pod, Rockingham Library, Park Campus. The workshop also includes a free lunch!
Dr Miggie Pickton will explain the importance of actively managing your research data and she will address the key issues and challenges in data management. You will also have the opportunity to use a data management planning tool.
The workshop is for research students and research staff at the University of Northampton. So whether you are studying for a PhD, are a member of University staff who has just completed a doctorate, or are a researcher in the early stages of your career, you are welcome to sign up. Go to

Re-launch of the Supervisor’s Forum

We are re-launching the University’s PhD Supervisor’s Forum.

Graduate School Generic Skills Programme 2013-14
The Graduate School’s generic workshop programme 2013-14, for UN Research Degree Students, can be found via the link below.
Our Development Days consist of a full day of workshops (usually three, plus lunch) for a specific stage of study. The Development Day programme begins again in the 2014-15 academic year.
