A new Postgraduate Society – members wanted!

Lucy Atkinson, PhD research student at UN is looking for members to join a new society. The Postgraduate Society is open to all students at UN who are registered on Postgraduate courses, which includes doctoral study – PhDs, Professional Doctorates and MPhils – and other Postgraduate courses such as Masters degrees.

PG SocietyThe idea for the Society is being promoted by Lucy after several discussions with students and the Student Union. The Society would…

  • …be entirely led by Postgraduate students
  • …raise the profile of postgraduate students among the student population
  • …gain funds from the Student Union
  • …put on quality events

The Society will need a committee, specifically secretary and treasurer, and perhaps reps for events and social functions. Consequently, the support of a large group of students would be needed to enable the new society to get off the ground so if you are a Postgraduate student at UN why not get in touch?

Graduate School Workshops: Highlights for November and December 2014

From now until the end of December, the Graduate School are offering doctoral students at UN a variety of skills development sessions.

Graduate School WorkshopsFor new PGRs: Two Development days are on offer – Getting Started 1 and 2 – containing no less than 6 different skills workshop.

For those students who are well into the task of writing: We have the skilled and knowledgable Adair Richards coming in to run an academic writing day – a skills training session AND practical writing retreat. Only 11 places left on this so book soon!

For those near the end of their PhD: Chris Roe’s Preparing for the Viva will run as an evening workshop and a careers workshop will support those looking for research work in academic and non-academic fields.

For all: We are also running two SPSS training sessions, these are open to Early Career Researchers and PGR students.

Getting Started on your doctorate?

Graduate School WorkshopsIf you are in the first year of your doctorate, you might want to book on Thursday 13th November’s Getting Started 1 workshop.

This Development Day contains three workshop sessions and has been designed for research students who are in the early stages of their research degree, covering:

  • Systematic Literature Searching
  • Risk Assessing your Research
  • Word: Working with Long Documents.

Jessica York’s Transfer Seminar: Equine Aqua-Treadmills

York, J JPEGJessica York, PhD research student at UN, would like to invite research staff and students to her Transfer Seminar “The Use of the Aqua-Treadmill in Equine Rehabilitation and Training“.

Jessica’s seminar will take place on Wednesday 19th November 2014 from 9:00 – 10:00am in M2, HE Block, Main Site (Gate 2), Moulton College.

The seminar will give an insight into ongoing research in the area of Equine Aqua-Treadmills and aims to specifically investigate the movement of the horse on the aqua-treadmill at increasing water depths in order to identify constructive, specific and controlled therapeutic rehabilitation and exercise.

‘The Collaborative Researcher’: A two day workshop at the OU

OU imageOn January 21st and 22nd 2015, on their campus in Milton Keynes, the Open University are holding an intensive 2-day workshop to help researchers develop collaboration skills .

The course is open to research staff and final year PhD/doctoral students and will look at the building blocks of the collaborative style of research: inclusive communication, cultural awareness, robust planning, negotiation and the ability to work effectively with others.

Places are free and all you need to cover are your travel expenses and any overnight accommodation (if required). The course will be attended by up to 30 researchers from across the country, from different disciplines and career stages. It is led by a team of experienced facilitators who work with participants throughout the 2 days to support learning.

Doing Interpretive Qualitative Research: A workshop on 3-4th November

Graduate School WorkshopsDr Jane Callaghan will be running a qualitative methodology workshop for the Graduate School next Monday and Tuesday 3-4 November.

There are just a few places left on Jane’s intensive 2-day workshop, which will explore different forms of interpretation in qualitative research, drawing on phenomenological approaches and Interpretive Interactionism to work with a range of textual, visual and spatial materials.

The workshop is open to any student currently registered on a research degree programme or any Early Career Researchers at the University of Northampton. If you are interested in attending please book here.
