New year’s resolutions: new skills anyone?
Happy new year to all from The Graduate School.
If you’re a Postgraduate Research Student how about making a new year’s resolution to focus more on your skills development. What knowledge or ability do you need to develop in 2016 to support your research degree? And what about your future career? Don’t wait until you’ve nearly finished your doctorate before you focus on that!
All the skills development workshops provided by the Graduate School (and the individual School’s discipline based programmes) are free to Northampton PGRs, so why not tap into them and learn some new skills to help support your doctoral studies and your career. Many workshops are also open to early career researchers working at the University.

Discipline-related research skills from the School of Social Sciences
The School of Social Sciences offers a programme of multidisciplinary training workshops. Subject-specific training and support is also offered via a diverse range of specialist research groups. Their programme is open to all PGRs at the University of Northampton.
Workshops coming up in 2016 include Research Impact, Researching with Vulnerable Groups (a joint workshop with the School of Health), and Open Access in the REF. Read the rest of this entry

Two transfer seminars coming up – support your fellow researchers
You are cordially invited to the transfer seminars of two of our research students, Umar Kyari and Joanne Alexander, both from the School of Social Sciences.
Umar’s seminar will be held on Monday 14th December from 2-2:30pm in Sulgrave S010, Park Campus and his study title is “Networks of Protest: The Role of New Social Media in the Arab Spring uprising”.
Joanne’s seminar will be held on January 18th 2016 at 15:00 in room N25, Naseby, Park Campus. Entitled “Deconstructing the Intergenerational Transmission of Family Violence”, the seminar may be of interest to those studying/working in the fields of social work, psychology, nursing, health and wellbeing, and sociology.

Transfer seminar – exploring the lived experiences of tattooed women
You are invited to PhD student Charlotte Dann’s transfer seminar on Tuesday 15th December 2015 at 9am in Cottesbrooke C119 on Park Campus. Charlotte is based in the Psychology division in the School of Social Sciences and her PhD explores the lived experiences of tattooed women.

Postgraduate Research Student Network: Christmas get-together
Are you a postgraduate research student? If so, hop along to our inaugural postgraduate networking Christmas party, which will be held at Top Lodge, the home of the Graduate School on Park Campus, on 16th December 2015 from 4-6pm.
In an attempt to establish some PGR socials and networking events, we are having this small Christmas social to get things started. So get your Christmas hats and jumpers on and come along for a PGR catch-up, sing along to Christmas songs, and enjoy a selection of food and mince pies. All PGRs welcome!

The afternoon will involve talks from our current postgraduate research students speaking on developments within their research. The event will start with a buffet lunch at 12.15pm and talks will begin at 1.15pm (see attached Poster for schedule and further information). The symposium is being held at our Pitsford Site, NN3 7QL (gate 4 of the main campus).
