Discipline-related research skills from the School of Health: open to all
The School of Health have recently launched their discipline-related development programme, which includes a range of workshops and seminars on a variety of themes, open to all PGRs at the University of Northampton. This development programme has been designed to support researchers – and those supporting research – in subjects which relate, broadly, to Health and Social Care. The sessions detailed are available to research students (PhD and Professional Doctorate) within the School of Health and from across the University. Hugh Kearns returns with good feedback! A workshop for supervisors.
On March 11th 2016 we are welcoming back researcher & educator, Hugh Kearns. Hugh is recognised internationally and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and, now for the third time, Northampton.
Hugh is running two workshops, one for supervisors on Giving Good Feedback, focusing on giving positive feedback, providing criticism without crushing the recipient, varying the type of feedback depending on the student’s stage, what to do when your student doesn’t listen… and more. A warm welcome to all of our new PGRs from everyone at the Research Support Hub!
Two thirds of the 38 new students, at the end of October’s four-day Induction
From 27th to 30th October 2015, The Graduate School welcomed 38 new postgraduate research students, all joining the University to start a research degree, some part-time, some full time, some off-site, many from overseas. 38 is the highest figure for a single induction here at Northampton.
Over the four days they were launched into their doctorate by an intensive series of workshops, including an introduction to the procedures and processes of doctoral study, support sessions where they met many members of University staff, IT sessions where they learnt some new research skills and a presentation session where they all gave a 5 minute talk on their research. Congratulations to all of the 38 PGRs and welcome to the University of Northampton. You can read more here.
English language workshops coming up.
If you are a research student for whom English is not your first language, you may be interested in some workshops which are taking place on 11th, 18th and 25th November. Workshop on public involvement in health and social care

A workshop on effective public involvement, organised by the School of Health, is to be opened out to all research students and early career researchers. The session is running on Wednesday December 2nd from 2-4 in PY101 and aims to provide an introduction to the principles, concepts and methods for effective public involvement (PI), participation and engagement. The workshop is to be facilitated by Paula Wray, Public Involvement Programme Lead for the National Institute of Health Research Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care East Midlands (NIHR CLAHRC EM). MOOCS and other skills development resources online for research students
Where do you go when you want to learn a new skill or improve your competency? Sign up to a practical, hands-on workshop? Or look online?
Whilst there is no substitute for attending a good skills development workshop, face-to-face learning is not always possible for a whole host of reasons – accessibility, time, family commitments. We all know how good YouTube is for learning ‘ordinary stuff’ but, increasingly, postgraduate students can find some valuable skills development resources online, such as via MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Workshops coming up: “Creativity in Research” and “Influencing, negotiating and networking”
We have a treat for all our postgraduate research students and early career researchers on 4th November, in the shape of excellent trainer, broadcaster and consultant Dr Adair Richards.
Adair will be running two workshops, in the morning Creativity in Research, and in the afternoon Influencing, negotiating and networking.
Online tutorials for PGR students and early career researchers
There are now five new interactive tutorials on the Skills Hub. You will find them in a new section ‘Postgraduate Research Skills‘ on the ‘Academic Skills‘ tab.
- Author bibliometrics – examines the key author bibliometrics and their use
- Journal bibliometrics – explores the use of impact factors and other metrics for ranking journals
- Journals and articles – addresses your publication strategy, journal types and what makes a ‘good’ paper
- Other forms of publishing – covers posters, exhibitions, creative works, website authoring and Open Access publishing
- Networking – making the most of face to face and online networking with fellow researchers
Professor Gina Wisker announced as keynote for SOTA Postgraduate Conference!
