Graduate School workshops in March

March hareMarch (and spring!) isn’t far away, so here is a quick rundown of the Graduate School workshops happening next month. Q Methodology is a research method used to study people’s “subjectivity” (their viewpoint) and Roshni Khatri will be running an introductory workshop to Q Methodology.

Personal Effectiveness Day focuses on negotiation, conflict handling skills, with strategies to handle the doctoral ‘roller coaster’. Quantitative Data Analysis 1 covers basic data analysis and variability and Dr Miggie Pickton and Nick Dimmock look at Open Access and the implications for your research. The doctoral roller coaster: managing the stresses of doctoral study

Frustrated_man_at_a_desk_(cropped)If you are a research student at UN you might be interested in “Personal Effectiveness Day: Managing professional relationships & handling the doctoral roller coaster”. This unique day-long workshop focuses on emotional and personal issues, often neglected but most definitely challenged during doctoral study.

The morning session, on Tuesday 3rd March, delivered by Karin Blak, Relationship Therapist and Trainer, focuses on the challenges of handling professional relationships, (with supervisors or research colleagues, for example) and aims to hone research students’ negotiation and conflict handling skills. The afternoon session, delivered by two UN PhD alumni, Dr Matthew Callender and Dr Richard Hazenberg, addresses some of the emotional challenges of research degree study, and offers strategies & solutions for handling the lows.

SRHE Professional Development Programme – workshops for researchers

The SRHE have some valuable workshops coming up for researchers (including research students) – Research Approaches and Methods on Wednesday 18th February, a one day writing retreat on Friday 20 February and Demystifying and Preparing for the Doctoral Viva on Wednesday 4th March. Other workshops coming up later include Peer Review – a Workshop for Newer Researchers, An Introduction to Constructivist Techniques and Publishing Academic Articles: A Way Through the Maze, to name a few. For more information about SRHE workshops for researchers see the Upcoming Events page and look for the workshops labelled “Network – Professional Development Programme”.

All workshops cost just £60 for non members and are free for members. Full time research students can join SRHE for as little as £35.

Graduate School Workshops in February 2015

mature students photoWe have a range of workshops running in February, open to Postgraduate Research Students and Early Career Researchers at UN.  They include short 2 hour workshops in qualitative and quantitative data analysis, a CV workshop and bibliometrics. Longer sessions include a presentation skills day for those of you presenting at conferences this year, plus Hugh Kearns will be visiting us again to help you tackle self-sabotage – procrastination, ‘too busy’ syndrome and disorganisation. Are you a part-time research student? If so, read on…….

Warwick logoPart-time research students, who are in the first half of their studies, are invited to a free Part Time Researcher day at the University of Warwick on Friday 6th February from 10am to 4:30pm.

The day offers an opportunity to meet and share experiences with other part-time researchers and, with the support of facilitators, discuss common issues facing part-time researchers and work towards practical solutions to some of them.

The workshop will cover:

  • The ethos and process of part-time research
  • Working with your part-time supervisor
  • Managing your time / avoiding self-sabotage
  • Setting practical objectives to help you work more effectively

2015 Skills Development Days for UN research students and Early Career Researchers

Graduate School WorkshopsFrom January to April the Graduate School are holding 4 different Development Days for PGRs, two of which are also open to Early Career Researchers working at UN. For PGRs preparing for Transfer, a Pre-Transfer Development Day is running on January 15th and a Personal Effectiveness Day on March 3rd looks at managing your supervisory (and other professional) relationships and handling the ups and downs of doctoral study.

For Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and PGRs we have a Presentation Skills Day in February, featuring experienced and highly effective trainer and researcher, Dr Adair Richards. This day is a must for all of you preparing to deliver conference and seminar papers in the spring and summer. Lastly we are holding a Publishing Day for support on publishing & writing for academic journals.

Qualitative Methodology: Interviews, Focus Groups, Research with Children

Graduate School WorkshopsDr Jane Callaghan will be running two qualitative methodology workshops for the Graduate School on Thursday 4th December.

The morning workshop will look in depth at both interviewing participants and using focus groups. The afternoon workshop will cover the ethical and practical issues of working with children. Both workshops will be held in Sunley Conference Centre.

The workshops are open to any student currently registered on a research degree programme or early career researchers at the University of Northampton.

Hugh Kearns returns to Northampton: a new Research Supervision Masterclass

Kearns2On February 13th 2015 we are welcoming back Australian researcher & educator, Hugh Kearns. Hugh is recognised internationally and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard, Stanford and, for the second time, Northampton!

In February 2014 Hugh delivered the Seven Secrets of Successful Research Students for Supervisors and now he is back, by popular demand, with another workshop for University of Northampton Supervisors:
