Questions about Open Access and the next REF?
Had an article accepted for publication? Busy writing up your article to submit to a journal? Make sure that your article doesn’t become ineligible due to a simple administrative oversight.
In order to be eligible for submission in the next REF (Research Excellence Framework) all journal articles and conference proceedings that were accepted for publication from the 1st of April must be deposited in NECTAR as soon as they are accepted, and no later than three months from the date of acceptance.
Dawn Hibbert, Head of Research Support will take you through HEFCE’s (Higher Education Funding Council for England) Open Access Policy and 5 steps that have been designed to ensure that your research outputs meet HEFCE’s requirements.
It is important that all journal articles and conference proceedings (not just those to be submitted to the REF) meet these requirements, or it will count against the Universtiy in the next REF.

ORCID IDs… Have You Got Yours Yet?
ORCID ID’s provide unique and persistent identifiers to researchers (much like a DOI for a journal article). Many funders—including the Wellcome Trust UK—now require ORCID IDs as part of the grant proposal process.
Wiley recently announced that from November 28th, “more than 500 Wiley journals using ScholarOne Manuscripts will require the submitting author (only) to provide an ORCID identifier (iD) when submitting a manuscript”1. This follows in the steps of other publishers such as IEEE and Hindawi that have required an ORCID Id since July 2016. Many other publishers have also introduced this requirement.
So how do you get an ORCID? The good news is that it is really easy – and takes no more than thirty seconds to register.
Once you have your ORCID ID you should include this when you submit publications and when you apply for grants.
1 Wiley, J., Sons, I., companies, or related and reserved, A. rights (2016) Wiley becomes First Major Publisher to require ORCID IDs for submitting authors. Available at: http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/PressRelease/pressReleaseId-129824.html (Accessed: 7 December 2016).
Moulton Research reaches Global Audience in the National Geographic!
Submitted by Wanda McCormick
If you pop down to your local newsagents today and flick through the latest August edition of the National Geographic magazine, you will find a striking image linked to one of our ongoing research projects here at the College. The image was taken by a professional photographer who visited the College last summer to document our ongoing conservation work with the photogenic but incredibly elusive harvest mouse! We have been investigating the ecological habits of this most charismatic of creatures as a means of prescribing pro-active conservation measures to ensure its survival in our green and pleasant countryside.
With a global circulation of around 7 million, this truly puts Moulton’s research on a global stage! To find out more about this and other research activities we undertake, why not check out: https://twitter.com/MoultonResearch
