PGR Induction week – a warm welcome to our new research students

A four day induction from 25th to the 28th October saw the Graduate School welcome a further 23 research degree students to the University of Northampton.
The 4-day biannual Induction Programme is run by The Graduate School in October and March and is compulsory for all research students starting out on their PhD or MPhil. The Induction aims to launch research students into their studies by offering them a variety of workshops and talks, covering processes and procedures, skills development and support, library resources, copyright and much more. The students also get a chance to give a presentation on their research topic and meet members of staff in the university who can support them along the way.

Many of our new research students are working professionals and academics, or are studying part time. Induction aims to welcome all new students, helping them to feel part of the University and giving them the perfect grounding for the long research degree road ahead.
Feedback from the programme was excellent. One student commented “The Induction was friendly, welcoming and informative.” Another commented “Great introduction to the services on offer at UN for research students” The next PGR Induction programme will run from Tuesday March 21st to Friday March 24th 2017.

The Graduate School Development Programme is designed for all University of Northampton researchers, research students and early career researchers. Gateway for postgraduate research students – getting started
Gateway is our online postgraduate research (PGR) management system. This post is to help postgraduate researchers (PGRs) to get started using it.
‘Gateway’, the postgraduate research management system
Gateway is our online postgraduate research (PGR) management system. The objectives of the system are to:
- Provide a shared, web-based record system for PGR students, their supervisors, school research leaders and the Graduate School;
- Provide electronic records of supervision meetings;
- Replace paper forms and signatures with electronic workflows and sign-off for all registration, progression and examination processes;
- Provide online booking and records of training and development, accessible to students and supervisors;
- Maintain support and contact with students and supervisors in any location;
- Give access using existing usernames and passwords.
Graduate School Update Day
This year’s Graduate School Update Day will run on Tuesday 21 June 2016 from 9am in Holdenby Lecture Theatre 3 at Park Campus. The theme for this year’s update will be research integrity with a workshop on integrity to be led by Dr Andrew Rawnsley (UK Council for Graduate Education). Update Day is open all the university’s research degree students and supervisors. Please note this date in your diary – booking details are here.
‘The betterment of society’ – Cumberland Lodge Scholarships available
A fantastic opportunity is available for PhD students to apply for a Cumberland Lodge Scholarship. The scholarships are aimed at scholars who are able to demonstrate a commitment to working for ‘the betterment of society’ through their academic research and/or other activities. The charity is currently focused on its work around ethical challenges in health, policing and social cohesion, but applications are welcome from any academic discipline. Read the rest of this entry
Part-Time Researcher programme for PGRs running on May 6th
If you are a Postgraduate Research Student studying part-time then you might be interested in the Part-Time Researcher Development Day The Graduate School are running on Friday 6th May, in collaboration with the Open University and Keele University.
Originally developed through Vitae, the Programme is a day-long series of discussions and workshops, offering part-time research students the time and space to share and discuss issues which directly affect their research degree study. Read the rest of this entry
