Analysing secondary data: new Graduate School workshop

Swedish MA students join history workshop

On 10th and 11th March, a group of history research students from the University of Uppsala in Sweden visited the University to take part in a two-day workshop. The Swedish students are studying a two-year MA programme in Early-Modern History (taught in English), which has a strong research component.

The workshop was organised by Professor Jon Stobart and involved students on the University’s MA History programme, as well as history PhD students from Northampton and the University of Leicester. It provided an opportunity for detailed discussion of the historical sources and methods being employed by the British and Swedish students, and was organised around a number of themed panels which focused on topics from crime to consumption.

Jo Campling Memorial Prize

The editorial board of the journal Ethics & Social Welfare has announced The Jo Campling Memorial Prize for the best student essays (3,000 words max) on a theme relevant to ‘ethics and social welfare’. Two prizes are available, one for postgraduate students and one for undergraduates. Jo Campling, who died in Summer 2006, was a publishing consultant and the driving force behind Ethics & Social Welfare. The closing date for entries is 30 September 2014.

Each winner – one postgraduate and one undergraduate will receive £150 and one year’s free personal print subscription to the journal. Two further prizes of £75 will also be given to the runner-up in each category.

UCL English Graduate Conference: Transformations – Call for Papers

Over the past century the study of English literature has undergone vast transformations, prompting academics and writers to re-evaluate the concept of the ‘canon’, examine practices of reading, and consider the cultural impact of texts and criticism.

This year’s UCL English Department graduate conference seeks to explore the nature of transformation and the many possible meanings this can hold for the wide diaspora of text production and consumption.

All PGR students are invited to submit papers for consideration. Please submit abstracts (max. 250 words) for 15 minute papers to transformations.ucl@gmail.com by 1st April. For more information, visit http://ucl-transformations.tk/.

‘Stories’ education conference: Call for papers and posters

Stories (Students’ Ongoing Research in Education Studies) is the annual conference for graduate students held at the Department of Education, University of Oxford. This year’s conference will take place on 18 March 2014.

The theme for Stories 2014 is ‘Lessons Learned: Challenges in Education and Implications for Research’. Graduate students at any stage of their research are invited to present and discuss their work in the field of education & related social sciences. There is also a special session during the conference for poster presentations.

The conference is open to research students from all universities. Students interested in presenting should email a 200 word (max) abstract by 21st February 2014. Please include the abstract in the body of your email. For more information see the University of Oxford Stories webpages.

Psychology Research Seminar – 26th February

Graduate School WorkshopsWe have a variety of Graduate School workshops coming up in February for research degree students.

We have 4 places left for Hugh Kearn’s Research Student workshop “Seven secrets” which will be held at Sunley Conference Centre next Tuesday 11th. Hugh Kearns is recognised internationally as a public speaker, educator and researcher and regularly lectures at universities across the world, including Oxford, Harvard and Stanford. Research students, please don’t miss this great opportunity.

Academy Scholarship Competition 2014

Dual publication for UN PhD students

Two PhD students from the 2011 cohort at The University of Northampton have had their papers published in the March 2014 edition of DECP Debate, a publication produced by the Division of Educational and Child Psychology (DECP) of the British Psychological Society.  They are Jacqueline Stone from the Division of Psychology and Carmel Capewell from the School of Education.
