Research Support Centre – Coffee Morning
Fresh into a new Academic year, the RSB team have their first Coffee Morning next Wednesday, 18th October 2017 in the Top Lodge Conservatory, Park Campus.
Drop in anytime between 10.30am-12pm for a chat about Gateway Haplo, our new funding system or help on funding applications. You may have a project you wish to discuss or want to know more about the opportunities and support we have available. Tea and coffee, nice biscuits and friendly advice is on offer.
Collaborating with Businesses and Delivering REF Impact
Innovate UK have announced additional funding for 200 Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) this financial year which will enable collaboration with businesses and deliver a REF impact. Come along to this event and find out the support available to take advantage of this increase. KTPs provide a rewarding ongoing collaboration with businesses and there are two KTPs currently underway here at Northampton.
Hear from Steve McGonigal (Programme Leader & Senior Lecturer for Product Design in FAST) on the practices and the benefits from the KTP process. Charlotte Patrick (Key Sector and Knowledge Transfer Manager) will also update on the support and benefits dedicated to KTPs.

The benefits of cycling as a mode of transport are well documented – including saving money, improving health and a cleaner environment for all.
We’re challenging you – whether you’re an academic, in business, involved in a charity, a startup or a data enthusiast – to use Strava Metro data to develop innovative solutions to answer the question, how do we get more people cycling?
How the challenge works:
We’ll provide you with the data and the rest is up to you! Your entry could take the form of a tool, an app, a visualisation, a linked dataset, or a new piece of software to clearly demonstrate your ideas. Following the first round of judging, selected finalists will be invited to pitch their innovations to the judging panel and an audience of event attendees at a Demo Day.
Prizes:
. £1,000 of Amazon gift vouchers for the winner/s
. £500 of Amazon gift vouchers for the runner/s up
. £500 of Amazon gift vouchers for the People’s Choice Prize
All finalists will also have their travel expenses paid to attend the Demo Day.

New Yammer Research Support Group
All staff have access to Yammer… Kind of like facebook for work… In order to give Researcher’s at our University a dedicated space for interaction, helpful files, presentations, links etc, a Research Support group has been created, including information on the REF and RDM. Feel free to join & access these resources! (https://www.yammer.com (log in with your Uni username and password)).
Gateway – New Funding Module
The RSB office are excited to announce that the Funding Module of Gateway will be going live from Friday, 15th September. This new system will replace the RGA forms and the need for paper sign off. From the 15th anyone developing or submitting an application for research or enterprise funding will be able to get their application signed off in Gateway.
You’ll be happy to know that the new system will deliver a number of improvements:-
- Better reporting of projects
- Improved visibility of workloads, deadlines and outstanding tasks
- Increased accuracy in fund reporting
- Ability to request review of proposals by peers, RSB or others at a touch of a button.
To help staff in the introduction of this new funding module, a Drop-In Session will take place on Monday, 18th September from 10am-2pm in the Top Lodge Conservatory – bring your laptop or phone and the RSB team will be available to talk you through this new process. If you prefer a 1:1 or group session, please contact RSB@northampton.ac.uk and we will be happy to come to you. Depending on demand, further drop-in sessions can be planned.
We are looking forward to this new system going live and believe it will provide a more efficient way of managing research funding.
Article Processing Charges – Update
The University of Northampton has an institutional fund for the payment of article processing charges.
Publishing “gold” allows your research, the published version, to be made freely available immediately upon publication to anyone with internet access. This enables people to access your work without waiting for embargo periods to pass (which can be up to 5 years or more!) and for the published version to be made freely available, rather than your accepted manuscript!
The University has entered into a number of agreements that allow us discounts on the cost of article processing charges:
- IEEE (25% discount – prepaid account)
- Springer (All APCs at zero cost – please select the open access option)
- SAGE (£200 Discount)
- Taylor and Francis (75% discount on most journals)
- Wylie (25% Discount)
When publishing with any of the above publishers, please contact openaccess@northampton.ac.uk and we will guide you through the process.
If you have any questions in relation to article processing charges, copyright or the quality of a journal, please do contact openaccess@northampton.ac.uk prior to signing a copyright transfer agreement.
Finding alternative sources of funding: Workshop for postgraduate researchers.
Are you a postgraduate researcher at UoN who is self-funded or partially funded? If so, you might be interested in coming along to Lucy Atkinson’s workshop, on 12th July 2017 from 12:00 to 14:30 in SO36. Lucy will show you possible routes to finding alternative sources of funding, whether for fees, maintenance, research expenses, conferences or travel. Lunch is also included! Want to Know More about Finding the Right Funder?
This interactive workshop is designed to help you to navigate the funding landscape and will cover topics on identifying the main sources of funding, how to use GRANTfinder effectively and winning tactics on how to increase your chance of success. The session is ideal if you have specific research ideas and would like help in finding external funding for them. Facilitated by Karen Lewis, Bidding Manager for the Research and Strategic Bidding Office.

Santander Funding Opportunities
Applications are now open for the Santander Mobility Fund and Santander Staff Research Award. Santander funding is available to encourage student mobility for a short term project and for staff who require support for a research project.
Both forms need to be submitted to corinna.coleman@northampton.ac.uk by the 30 April 2017.

Writing a Winning Bid
All you need to know when Writing a Winning Bid
Writing a winning bid isn’t as simple as just putting your ideas down on paper. Making sure that your written application does your project justice is key to impressing the reviewers and securing funding. Facilitated by Helen Backhouse, Bidding Officer for the Research and Strategic Bidding Office, this workshop will equip you with the tools to write a winning bid of your own.
