Research data clinics – 30th October 2012
Are you wrestling with a tricky research data problem? If so, perhaps we can help.
As part of our ongoing ‘engagement’ with the Digital Curation Centre, Sarah Jones and Marieke Guy will be running a couple of data management ‘clinics’ for researchers at Northampton. They will also present a short introductory talk covering the basics of research data management and highlighting the data services available to researchers at Northampton.
British Library open days for new research students
The British Library has just announced a new set of open days for new PhD students.
Aimed at students of English, Drama, Music, History, Social Sciences, Media, Cultural Studies, Journalism, Art and Design, each subject-specific open day will introduce the wide variety of resources in the British Library’s collections.
These free sessions do get booked up quickly so act now if you would like a place.
Love British Books 2012 (and NECTAR)
Through October the Gallery Corridor at Avenue Campus is displaying selections from Love British Books 2012, an exhibition of contemporary British literature, book decoration and design co-curated by Paul Middleton and Carolyn Puzzovio.
The exhibition was first shown at the Museum of Art and Literature, Yerevan, Armenia in June to mark Yerevan’s selection as UNESCO’s City of the Book 2012 and the 500th anniversary of the first book printed in Armenia.
The book accompanying the exhibition is available to view on NECTAR, the university’s repository of research output – read on to learn about the benefits NECTAR can offer.

At a School research meeting yesterday I was asked whether it was legal, for copyright reasons, to deposit the full text of a journal article in NECTAR.
The answer, perhaps surprisingly, is very often YES.

East Midlands Research Support Group
Nick and I spent yesterday afternoon at the University of Nottingham, attending a meeting of the East Midlands Research Support Group (EMRSG). This group, which comprises library staff from – you’ve guessed it – East Midlands universities, is a community of practice dedicated to sharing good practice in supporting researchers.
Announcing an engagement
You only have to look at recent statements from Research Councils UK, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and others to know that researchers are under increasing pressure to create and manage their data in an appropriate and, ideally, open way.
The University of Northampton was one of the earliest universities to develop a research data policy. Our policy is straightforward. It recognises that good research is underpinned by good research data management and expects researchers to follow RCUK recommendations for achieving this. On a practical level it encourages each researcher to produce a data management plan at an early stage of their research lifecycle and to deposit their data in a data repository on the completion of the project.
