Human Endeavour in Antarctica and Space: Inspiring stories from the end of the Earth and beyond.
On the 10th June 2016, the University of Northampton will host the conference ‘Human Endeavour in Antarctica and Space‘. Using Antarctica and Space as the context, the accomplished conference speakers will discuss a variety of topics connected to science, exploration and endeavour, photography and entrepreneurship.
Antarctica has often been used as a context to study humans in isolation and served as an analogue environment for human spaceflight. Bringing speakers together who have been involved in both Antarctic and Space related endeavours offers a unique experience and one which we hope will go some way to inspire others in their own work and life. Nicola Smithers (Senior Lecturer in Law) is presenting her Transfer seminar on May 5th at 12 noon in Naseby 24, Park Campus. The seminar is open to all University research students and staff.
Nicola’s title is: ‘The Legal, Ethical and Clinical Justifications for Withholding and Withdrawing Treatment from Critically Ill Neonates’. She would welcome all feedback on her project and work so far, so if you would like to attend please confirm your attendance with John Horton.
Workshop: Publishing and reviewing with Taylor & Francis
Library and Learning Services in conjunction with the Graduate School are delighted to announce a new workshop for research students and staff.
Elaine Devine from Taylor & Francis will be leading the workshop and will bring a publisher perspective to the two important scholarly activities of getting published and becoming a peer reviewer.

Call for papers: 2nd Annual Northampton Business School Research Conference
A call for papers from NBS staff and NBS doctoral students for the 2nd Annual NBS Conference has been announced. Changemaker for Tomorrow: creating business impact through research is this year’s theme and the conference will run on 15th and 16th June 2016. The deadline for abstracts is May 3rd 2016.

Research Councils UK announcement: the future of J-eS
If you’ve ever applied to a Research Council for funding, you’ll be familiar with J-eS, RCUK’s joint submission system. However we’ve recently been informed that things will be changing from next year.
The Je-S system has come to a natural end, and in the words of RCUK:
‘This is a fantastic opportunity to design a smarter, simpler more user friendly service in line with the latest digital standards. Work is already underway to design the new awards service. This work is based on extensive user research to ensure that when the changes come into effect you will find they better meet your needs.
So what sort of improvements can you expect?
As an applicant, peer reviewer, research manager or administrator you will no longer use the Je-S system to apply for grants, submit reviews or manage your research organisations grants activities. There will be an entirely new external portal. In future the whole grant application form will be digitised which means in the majority of cases no more uploading of attachments. And there are other improvements such as in built formatting for font size and word count, improved dashboards to help you manage your grant activities as well as guidance relevant to a particular funding opportunity close at hand all on the one screen while you are applying’
We can expect to see the new system being piloted in March 2017, parallel running of both systems from May 2017 and the new system being used for all submissions and reporting by early 2018.
The RSB office will be able to pass on more information about the new system once we’ve seen it demonstrated in June, but if you are planning to submit a new RCUK application from may 2017 onwards, you probably won’t be using J-eS. Watch this space, and don’t forget the RSB team can help with applying to the Research Councils for funding, as well as anyone else you might be thinking of so do get in touch if you need support with an application.
