‘The betterment of society’ – Cumberland Lodge Scholarships available
A fantastic opportunity is available for PhD students to apply for a Cumberland Lodge Scholarship. The scholarships are aimed at scholars who are able to demonstrate a commitment to working for ‘the betterment of society’ through their academic research and/or other activities. A warm welcome to all of our new PGRs!
From March 15th-18th 2016 The Graduate School welcomed 22 new postgraduate research students, all joining the University to start a research degree, some part-time, some full time, with many being members of University staff.
Over the four days they were launched into their doctorate by an intensive series of workshops, including an introduction to the procedures and processes of doctoral study, support sessions where they met members of University staff, IT sessions, networking opportunities and a presentation session where they all gave a 5 minute talk on their research.

Call for conference submissions – Interdisciplinary research with children, young people and families: crossing boundaries, sharing stories

Submissions are invited for an event which will explore the value and challenges of interdisciplinarity in research with children, young people and families in diverse contexts. Contributions are welcomed from diverse perspectives, backgrounds, geographical contexts and disciplinary positions. We are seeking 20-minute papers, or 40-minute workshop activities.

Dates changes to NECTAR deposits
We’ve made some changes to the way dates are recorded in NECTAR with a new plugin called Dates, Dates, Dates. This will enable us to capture multiple date types for research outputs, which will improve the data we record, and enable us to capture required information to support HEFCE, RCUK and other funder policies.
This post explains the changes and tells you what you need to know to use the new Dates field.
REF – OPEN ACCESS
Each Unit of Assessment will need to submit a section on “open research”, detailing the submitting unit’s open access strategy, including where this goes above and beyond the REF open access policy requirements, and wider activity to encourage the effective sharing and managment of research data.
To assist us in meeting this criteria, please ensure that all research outputs that are accepted for publication are uploaded to NECTAR as soon as they have been accepted
Note – copyright will be checked, and all publisher’s policies will be respected. What can be made open, will be!
Note – by depositing your work in NECTAR this does not make your work automatically open access.

If you are a Postgraduate Research Student studying part-time then you might be interested in the Part-Time Researcher Development Day The Graduate School are running on Friday 6th May, in collaboration with the Open University and Keele University.

Report: Taylor & Francis – Insights into publishing
Last week I attended an interesting event put on by Taylor and Francis (T&F) and, knowing that quite a few Northampton researchers publish with T&F, I thought I’d share some of the things I learned.
There were several talks during the day, covering support for early career researchers; peer review and journal development; the role of the editorial team; journal production; dissemination; and open access. The full slide presentation is available here but for me a number of points stood out.
