Dr Mike Daniel Research Degree Scholarship – £500
The deadline for applications for the Mike Daniel Research Degree Scholarship is the 15th May 2015. Find out how you can apply.
Dr Mike Daniel was Pro Rector (Academic Quality) from 1993-2002 and played a major role in guiding the institution towards taught degree awarding powers and university college designation. At his untimely death in 2002 he was preparing the case for full university designation, friends and colleagues raised sufficient funds to create a research degree scholarship to be named after him.

Research data management principles and responsibilities
This morning the University’s Research and Enterprise Committee approved several recommendations put forward by its Research Data Working Group. Among these was the adoption of a new set of research data management (RDM) principles and responsibilities.
The principles are designed to support the University’s research data policy and roadmap, and follow a similar pattern to those in use at a number of other universities. The group hope that these will clarify the university’s expectations of good practice in research data management as well as enabling those bidding for external funding to demonstrate their compliance with funders’ requirements.
The principles and responsibilities are outlined in this document and replicated below.
RefWorks update
Just a brief note to say we’ve made some changes to the Harvard UoN citation style in RefWorks (some minor corrections and improved support for audio recording citations), so if you use the Harvard UoN for your bibliography you’ll need to add it to your list of output styles again.
By any other name: rchive.it, RoMEO and your self-archiving rights
Can you self-archive your e-print? How would you know? What does it even mean? Why am I bothering you with this? These are all perfectly valid questions that may now have a more straightforward answer thanks to a rchive.it. Read on for details of how this web service can simplify an important part of the self-archiving process for NECTAR deposits.
A new Postgraduate Society – members wanted!
Lucy Atkinson, PhD research student at UN is looking for members to join a new society. The Postgraduate Society is open to all students at UN who are registered on Postgraduate courses, which includes doctoral study – PhDs, Professional Doctorates and MPhils – and other Postgraduate courses such as Masters degrees.
The idea for the Society is being promoted by Lucy after several discussions with students and the Student Union. The Society would…
- …be entirely led by Postgraduate students
- …raise the profile of postgraduate students among the student population
- …gain funds from the Student Union
- …put on quality events
The Society will need a committee, specifically secretary and treasurer, and perhaps reps for events and social functions. Consequently, the support of a large group of students would be needed to enable the new society to get off the ground so if you are a Postgraduate student at UN why not get in touch?
If you are interested in becoming a member then please email your name, email address and student number to lucy.atkinson@northampton.ac.uk. Please also contact Lucy if you have any further comments or ideas.
